Songs I Can't Stand #5 - "Keep on Loving You"

@JohnRoberts started it, @FourWalls kept it going, and so am I. #5 in my Songs I Can't Stand series is a song by a band making their first appearance in one of my music countdowns: "Keep on Loving You" by REO Speedwagon. As always, if you like it, I do understand. It would be a very boring world if we all liked the same music. Named after the REO Speed Wagon flatbed truck founded by Ransom E. Olds, REO (formerly R.E.O.) Speedwagon formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1967, and despite the 2015 death of longtime guitarist Gary Richrath, remain a popular live rock act to this day. The band has sold more than 40 million records, and have placed 13 Top 40 hits onto the Billboard Hot 100. From their HUGE 1980 album Hi Infidelity (how huge? 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, with 10 million copies sold,) "Keep on Loving You" was a smashing success in it's own right, a platinum single that hit #1 on the Hot 100, and counting the US, was Top 5 in 10 countries, and Top 20 in four others. If it doesn't hold the record for appearing on the most soft rock compilations, I want to know which song does. "Keep on Loving You" was the first single by the band to crack the Top 50 on the Hot 100. In other words, this schmaltzy power ballad turned REO Speedwagon into superstars. Not a great song like "Golden Country," or "Ridin' the Storm Out," but "Keep on Loving You." No wonder why the music buying public thinks I don't trust them! This song is simply laughable. A sap, err, gentleman, declaring his undying love to a woman, despite the fact that she cheated on him? With "all those men," no less? The rest of us are laughing at you, man.
