The Art of the Selfie

Now I am sure that all of the young people on here are expert at taking selfies. I have found that I am rather a dud at the selfie. I now have tried any number of times to get a half way decent picture of myself, without too much success. I am coming to the conclusion that isn't so much that my photography is bad, it is more that my mental image of myself is rather out of date. Seeing myself as I look today in all my 66-year-old glory is not in keeping with my image of a perhaps 45-year old that I cherish. I am either going to adjust my mental image or stop taking selfies. lol Anyone else having a problem?

That is a great picture of you! Nice to have a face to go with the name. I find when I take a selfie I never know where to look to get a good shot..lol

You look pretty darn good to me for being 66!!! I need an arm about 10 feet long before I'd ever take a selfie. I despise having my photo taken. I'm not very photogenic, however, for some strange reason, I look best in candid shots.

I feel most comfortable in candid shots. I don't like to "smile for the camera." But if you catch me doing what I do, I'm comfortable with it.

@BelleStarr Thank you, Iz! I try not to look the way I do right now in photos. Lol! A friend stopped by unexpectedly this morning while I was changing the sheets, doing laundry, cleaning, and emptying the dishwasher. At least I had lipstick and ran a comb through my hair.

The only time that I ever considered taking a selfish was for a passport photograph, otherwise I have absolutely no interest.

There are so many sites where I write or promote that want a picture, I am just trying to come up with one that isn't 5-10 years old lol

Can you do this in England? In Germany, such a photo wouldn't be accepted. We have to have 'biometrical' photos and only professional photographers can make them.

Luckily I don't have a mobile phone so can't take selfies. I can imagine I'd only ever take one and that would be it!

I think you've done a good job with this one...it's a good selfie.. I often take them... but am quite critical of some of them... I usually use them to send to family when I'm out and about and to keep in touch... but Ibknow what you mean about our mental images and reality lol... I much prefer my mental image to reality...but never mind..lol

My expressions always come out strange,lol. My girls take selfies all the time and always turn out so pretty. Maybe we need a little more practice, lol.

There is no age when it comes to selfies, all you need to do (if you want to of course) is practice and see which angles you like yourself in the most. Some people take so many selfies that they already know the exact angle and posistion the phone should be in and the body also. Selfies aren't just for the young either. Photos are for all ages and a selfie no matter what, is a photo of yourself.

I don't like taking selfies. I hate looking at myself because selfies shows my wrinkles. So, I rather have my picture taken with a distance so my wrinkles and eyebag cannot be seen .

You did a great job on this one! My myLot picture is a selfie. I'm always very self conscious smiling for the selfie! I don't take many, but I know people who take them all the time and get really good ones. Practice makes perfect I guess!
