Proverbs 17:27
Proverbs 17:27 He that hath knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
It’s best to keep quiet when you don’t know the answer, instead of spouting off about something you know nothing about.
With as many people as Solomon dealt with daily, I’m certain he saw many people who spoke without having anything to say.
Salesmen and politicians have the same thing in common. They open their mouths but nothing in the form of wisdom issues forth. They both try to sell you on an idea, but it’s hard to find people who buy into what they offer.
Children have more wisdom in their simple logic than most adults.
Psalm 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou might still the enemy and the avenger.
Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
When you stop talking long enough to listen to what you are saying, you just might hear something worth hearing.
Let’s pray: Father, help me keep quiet so I can hear what you are saying. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

I have often heard it quoted as well, especially in my childhood.
