Songs I Can't Stand #1 - "Hey Jude"

And yet another musical extravaganza ends. #1 in my Songs I Can't Stand is the much revered "Hey Jude" by The Beatles. The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960. They are the biggest selling band in history, with over 600 million records sold (The Guinness Book of World Records estimates it at over a billion.) The band won ten Grammy Awards during their time together, and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both as The Beatles, as well as all four separately. They are the all time leader on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Written by Paul McCartney for Julian Lennon, who was distraught over his parent's divorce, "Hey Jude" was the first single (1968) released on the band's newly formed label, Apple. "Hey Jude" spent a whopping nine weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, the longest of any Beatles single, and it has sold roughly eight million copies. Although it didn't win, the song was nominated for three Grammy's (including losses to Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" for Record of the Year, and O.C. Smith's "Little Green Apples" for Song of the Year.) It is, however, in the Grammy Hall of Fame. "Hey Jude" has been covered by Elvis Presley, Wilson Pickett, and "Weird Al" Yankovic, who inserted it into a polka medley. Obviously, I don't like "Hey Jude," but come on. "Little Green Apples" was a better song than this? Anyway, I once owned "Hey Jude" on 45, a gift from a well meaning relative. And it was soooo boring. And, to me, it still is. Soooo boring. This is honestly one song that I don't actually know all the lyrics to, because I pretty much tune McCartney out as soon as I hear him belt out "Hey Jude" at the beginning (if I can't turn it off or leave the room.) And then there's the 15 minutes of nothing but "na na na na na, " at the end, which I just can't take. This thing just drags on and on and on. I didn't like it the first time I heard it, and it just never grew on me the way lots of songs have done over the years. On to the video, linked below. I think you will enjoy it. It's The Beatles, in all their long haired glory, performing the song on British television. John Lennon appears to be chewing gum while singing back up vocals. When they start showing the audience near the end, keep your eyes peeled for an older guy wearing glasses. He's hilarious. He's probably dead by now, but thanks, pops, you made me laugh! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
The Beatles 1 Video Collection is out now. Available on: http://www.thebeatles.com/ Hey Jude topped the charts in Britain for two weeks and for 9 weeks in Am...

This came oh, so close to making the list....in fact, it was on the list, then I realized I'd probably sing along if I saw Paul sing it live, so I went with "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" instead. The main problem I have with this song is it's a pretty good two-minute song.....but it's six minutes long.

@JolietJake -- 7:11? That's long enough to name a chain of convenience stores after!

The length is my biggest problem, I think, because I find it so boring.

Oh, don't be sorry. Eight million people bought it, so it's obviously quite popular.

Well I am in shock after watching your discussion.I can't say anything because that's your choice and your understanding of music. But for me it is one of the best songs which I would love to listen to anytime.

And that's just fine. We can't all like the same music. It sold eight million units, so it's obviously a very popular song. I'm happy that you like it.

It's one of those odd songs that I neither like nor dislike. Neutral. Cool story though

This is a very classical song. This song was played a lot from the radio long time ago. I heard it again from the opening ceremony in London Olympics. I liked it again. Perhaps this is the charm of a classical song.

Oh, it is definitely a classic, maybe even their signature song. That's the beauty of music, though. There is so much of it out there that we can't all possibly like the same thing. The world would be very boring if we did. I'm glad that you like it, and I hope the joy you get when you hear it never leaves. Because that's what it's supposed to do!

I never did like that song. Never liked the phony sentiments or the extended ending either. Except for a few songs, I never understood what made them so popular. I was a child when they appeared in the US but I've grown up with their music and much prefer other bands. I just don't like them.

The funny thing is, when bands cover Beatles songs, I do tend to like the covers better.

I loved Hey Jude because it takes me back to a magical time in my life. However the ending went on too long and that was a bit boring, Sometimes I hear songs that I didn't particularly like at the time but when I hear them played many years later they bring back that nostalgic feeling so I decide I do like them after all.
