If any of you have seen the film Moonraker when James Bond throws a baddie through the decorative glass clock then you will have seen this clock yourself The first clock was built in the 1400's and updated several times over the centuries. The most recent restoration was in 1996 which has caused much controversy in as much as they did not use traditional methods in replacing parts of the clock when ancient monuments are restored they should be restored using traditional skills and workmanship. Also they had changed some of the fundamental features of the clock which is not really appropriate when repairing something of such historical value. The outer ring consists of Roman Numerals 1-24 denoting the hours of the day. The inner ring the 12 signs of the Zodiac covered in gold leaf. The arm of the clock consists of the long arm with the sun emblem on it also in gold leaf. There is a moon on the inner circle depicting the moon phases. Above the clock at the top of tower there is a bell that is stuck by two brass figures that have turned black due to the moisture around Venice . Just below that the winged statue of a lion the Emblem of St. Mark holding a bible and just below that there are two little doors from which the Magi preceded by a trumpeting angel pay homage to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus. They are not the original figures but replacements. I love to look at these marvelous Astronomical clocks the more famous of these clocks being in Strasbourg and Prague.

@garymarsh6 You'll see a different Prague from the one I saw. I was there in 1967.

The one in Prague was a fascinating sight, but difficult to photograph due to being in a narrow aisle.

The one in Strasbourg Cathedral is in a really dark corner but if you put a couple of Euro's in the machine it will light up during its performance! It is stunning to watch.

I have seen the one in Strasbourg, this one in Venice, but never the one in Prague. Moonraker was a good movie. I have not yet visited Prague, my brother already visited 4 times, I have seen his photos, it's a beautiful city.

I think the facade they used was a mock up but it was based on another clock but looked similar to the one in Venice.

These are fascinating to watch. There is also a very complex one in Goslar, Germany, which commemorates the history of mining there.

@garymarsh6 My ancestors, way back, lived here and at nearby Osterwieck. If you search 'tagged discussions' and key in Goslar, there are four posts about that region. The YouTube clip which shows the clock is: And of course it's perfectly okay if you don't have time to go there at the moment.

@garymarsh6 I was in Messina for a short time but didn't see this spectacle. Pity! The roaring lion is funny. It looks as if it has severe digestive problems.

@MALUSE Yes it only performs at Mid day. If the Lion did not have digestive problems it may nearly make you have some ! It is astonishing the noise it makes! I think you have also seen the clock in Strasbourg Cathedral on one of your visits?

@JohnRoberts Absolutely there is a brilliant one I saw last year in Messina. Have a look at it on youtube it is stunning and the roaring lion is quite frightening along with the cockerel. The intricate timing and work gone into making this clock is phenomenal. The music plays during the performance as each tier enacts some biblical scene,

I appreciate both the picture and the information. This is lovely. It is a shame that they did not stick to historically accurate methods, though.

Items like the clock you talk about are wonderful history. Something that should always be preserved for the lifetime of the human race. Regardless of changing times. But the world is one uncertain place and the people in it are also unpredictable. So I see things as anything is possible and anything could happen.

In two or three hundred years time there will be many places in the USA that will meet the same criteria. The liberty bell is already one such thing. I visited a wonderful Mansion in NC at Asheville and they have preserved it remarkably well. It is the largest privately owned house in the USA. Owned by the Vanderbilt's. It is based on the French Chateau design similar to one built in the UK by the Rothschild's, It is a stunning place and one that is already over 120 odd years old.

@garymarsh6 I am sure there will be many more in a few hundred years. But who really knows how things will pan out in a few hundred years. Now that my country is in the hands of a maniac. Anything is now possible and anything can happen. I would love to come back in a 1000 years time to see if we all survived the future.

It is a very attractive clock. Did they ruin its value with the non traditional repair?
