Frustrated When I Can't Find Something - Photographs

Canada
March 1, 2017 8:30am CST
I was looking for a photo we (my sister and I) took 30 years ago so I could post it here. It was a photo of my sister's children with my children in the woods while camping. If I ever find it (I know its here somewhere), I will post it with another hiking story.... sigh, it will have to wait... I have in our basement four very heavy boxes full of photo albums and a lot of loose photos. I also have most of my mother's photos from her childhood... It's a walk back into history... My mother was born in 1911 on a farm in Maryland. Her family moved to Central New York state when she was a baby. While searching for something else today, I found the photo above. My mother is with her three brothers in Chemung N.Y. She was the second oldest child and outlived all her brothers. She grew up on a farm, became a teacher, married in 1938, had three children, and she passed away in 1986. Do you have photos of your parents when they were children? It's so interesting to see the difference in clothing from their childhood to now. I'd love to see some photos of your parents as children. Have you got any to share?

That is a great picture. I love old photos, they say so much. I'm the only girl in a family of 4 children, just like your mother is. I have photos of my parents in their younger days, but they are not digital, and I don't know how to scan them or I would share them also.

Scanning is easy, ask a teenager to help you. That is how I learned to scan photos on to my computer. I learned how do do it when my kids were in high school but needed a new lesson from my 40 years old's when we got the new computer...

@PainsOnSlate The "other" issue is that the printer is in a corner of a spare bedroom which is stacked about 5 feet tall with boxes and I cannot access it.

That;s a sweet photo. I haven't got any of either of my parents when they were children (they probably didn't know what a camera was!). I have this one of my mother when she was about 18.

@PainsOnSlate Wow - your mother did it all herself, how wonderful.

I love your photo, I have a bunch of photos of my mother but forgot only one thing as I wrote my discussion. My mother (and so someone in her family was) a photographer. I have her tools in the basement, She did all the printing of her old photos up until we children were almost teens... Now you made me wonder who took the photo of my mother and brothers...Wish I had thought to ask that while she was alive....

Even having such older photos is amazing. Many of us seem to have some, but never enough. We have several with no names!

Thanks, glad you like it. Too bad there are no photos from long ago... I figured out I have so many because my mom was the photographer once she was old enough and she printed all her own photos, we have a lot of photos and i wondered how she could afford that...until we cleaned our my parents house and I found her printer and have vague memories of her dark room when I was little...

@amadeo She learned how to do her photo at home, she only did it for her own photos, she had a darkroom made in the basement...She did it because she loved to do it and it saved her and Dad a ton of money...

When I was two, my parents house caught on fire from a faulty wire and burned to the ground, destroying everything inside the house, including all their photo albums. Various other relatives have photos of my parents in their younger days, but unfortunately I haven't been able to see too many of them. Of the few I've seen of my dad in his younger days, I am a splitting image of him.

@PainsOnSlate Our house was a complete loss. The fire started in the living room from faulty electrical wiring in the wall. From the stories I heard, the house was completely engulfed in flames by the time the fire department arrived on scene.

That is a sad story, I guess we were lucky. We had a fire in our city house but it was put out and was just on the porch. My bone structure is from my dad and my height, I do resemble my mom's face but she was tiny and my dad was very tall...

My parents were both adorable kids. I love seeing the old black and white photos. I love the clothes the boys are wearing in this photo of yours. It looks like they have a type of overalls on. I look forward to reading the next hiking story when you find that photo.

I've looked for it and still can't find it but there are a few places I haven't looked. My sister says I have all the "before computers" photos of our camping so I will keep looking.

I do not. Actually my mother doesn't even have any photos left. She's been evicted a number of times and lost all of her personal belongings a few times in those evictions. I'm lucky to have a couple pictures of myself from childhood.

Wow, kool photo. I remember a photo you posted a while back of you and your sister with a whole lotta younguns. I have photos of mom in her 20s (I think so anyway) but none of her as a child, she was the 4th child born in 1916 and she outlived all her siblings too. I did post a shot of mom a while back but I can't recall how long ago, I'll have to look into my old stuff to try to find it.

Awe, what a nice photo. Yes, I am fortunate to have a ton of photos. I just recently posted one of my grandma who was born in 1900. I will post some more in the future.

All my photos are at home in Connecticut. I have several. Wish I had more. I grew up as the only girl in my family and extended family. I, too, became a teacher. I miss my mother dearly.

Being the only girls must have been fun, I had one sister and dozens of girl cousins, lots of boy cousins too...

@PainsOnSlate I always wanted a sister or a daughter, but was blessed with my daughter in law, granddaughter, and son's fiancée. I couldn't afford both me and a daughter. Lol!

I would need to go through the box of photos my sister gave me from my parents albums, which were divided between us. Great picture.

Love the photo and love the hair on that boy, I wish I had that on my head. Charming photo and I love that the baby has no shoes on his feet.. Our mothers were close in age.

@PainsOnSlate I guess they slept with rags in their hair overnight to get the ringlets. I was lucky enough to have my Mum around till 2014 and she was reasonably well until the last six months or so.
