Here is Part V of a comic short story which I'm entering for a competition. Click on any of the green boxes at the top of the post and you'll get taken to the other parts. Bon Appetit By the time the six weeks were up, Quentin had been well and truly bitten by the cooking bug. So began a new phase in our lives. Quentin cooked almost every night. Mind you, we often didn't eat till nearly nine o'clock but he gradually improved in that area. He took so long choosing meat cuts and discussing various options with the butcher that I handed most of the shopping over to him too. I praised everything he cooked (well, nearly), cleaned up and washed up, kept my mouth shut even when he used every saucepan in the place and a fresh spoon for every tasting. I ironed his apron, and found the tin of asparagus tips when he was quite certain there were none in the cupboard. He was a bit heavy with the curry at times but generally we had some very nice meals. Then he decided he needed to cook with wine. Sometimes he even added it to the food. In addition to all my other duties, I now had to keep his wine-glass filled. Luckily it was mostly red he drank, I mean added, so my SSB was quite safe. Being a man, he had a bit of trouble multi-tasking but eventually we were able to eat our curry and rice as one course rather than two. He branched out into some very exotic dishes and our little spice rack of eight bottles quickly became somewhat inadequate. Although he did most of the shopping, any shortages were attributed to me. We began to have conversations that went 'what do you mean we have no rice wine vinegar? How can I be expected to cook masterpieces without rice wine vinegar? My dish is ruined!' Talk about histrionics! So I would do the long drive into town to pick up rice wine vinegar, extra virgin unadulterated organic olive oil and some organic vegan eggs. Yes, I kid you not. Vegan eggs!

@silvermist That's right and you have to get your ideas from somewhere.

Vince proofed it for me. He said he wasn't quite that bad but I said it wasn't about him - well not really. Some of it is based on fact but it's highly exaggerated.

My husband also has the meal done late and makes a mess, but I am trying to get him to make a less mess, because though I appreciate his cooking, I don't have time to clean up a dirty kitchen every night.

@JudyEv I don't mind cooking, as long as no one expects a gourmet meal..Like I can cook tacos, spaghetti (my son's favorite) steaks and hamburgers. My husband also invested in lots of hamburger/chicken helper (I don't like using these prepackaged disasters, but when they are on clearance, my husband must pick them up) . Where I am weak are in soups and chili, I can't make either one of these.

@Carmelanirel2 We don't have chili. I sometimes use the casserole bases if I'm cooking but I don't do much now.

If Vince will cook, I'm prepared to put up with quite a lot of mess. I guess it depends how badly you want to get out of the cooking.

@Jessicalynnt Originally I had 'vegetarian eggs' but someone at the writing group said it's 'vegan'. I should have checked for myself.

@judyev I heard an Argentinian woman interviewed on TV once, a lady in a fur coat and obviously well-heeled and well-bred. She was asked how the economic crisis was effecting everyday life and she threw her hands into the air in dispair and declared that she couldn't find balsamic vinegar anywhere.

So how much of this is fiction? And what happened to Adam and Eve? I'm waiting for the next instalment...

They're all up now. I'm afraid Adam and Eve don't get mentioned again. Sorry.

I've written a couple of comedies with a friend and had them performed locally. That's a bit nerve-wracking too. Hoping the audience will laugh.

@JudyEv Oh I could understand - hoping the audience "gets the joke". Must be awesome though to see it come to life like that. Wow!

Ha ha So you had some very nice dinners. Well, sometimes when I cook up chapatis(Indian breads made of wheat flour and dough), my wife knows it will take time. One of my kid even used to laugh at the sight of me in kitchen, as I rarely go in kitchen, except for Milk tea, where I think I am a bit better off than my wife(Ginger Tea, and other teas) :) Still it is good to know that he improved a lot, and you are surely enjoying the time!

@JudyEv Well, if my wife allows me to "experiment" in the kitchen more often!

It would be very nice to have someone besides me cook, but I don't think my husband is the one.

Thanks. The order wouldn't make a lot of difference. It would all make sense after the last one.
