Did you know that every year Hawaiians consume more than 6 million cans of Spam? I have tried Spam but I don’t care for it. Have you ever eaten Spam? Have you ever heard of putting ketchup on cottage cheese? I can’t even imagine what that tastes like. However, I did hear that it was President Richard Nixon’s favorite lunch. Hmmmm. I have a friend who absolutely LOVES hot dogs and has claimed that he could eat them every day. However, I told him that I had heard that a hot dog can last more than 20 years in a landfill, although I don’t know how someone figured that out. But, think about all those preservatives. Have you ever eaten the Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing at an Outback Steakhouse? Delicious, aren’t they? Just so you know, one serving has 2,900 calories and 182 grams of fat. Oh, my poor arteries! Did you know that LIVESTOCK receive 80% of all the antibiotics sold in the USA. Makes you want to be a vegetarian. Except for the bug spray and fertilizers. Do you purchase only ORGANIC food? No wonder cancer is increasing in the USA. We are being poisoned and the FDA continues to approve of all this. But, what can we do?

According to Michael Pollan, if your grandmother or great-grandmother doesn't recognize something as food, then you shouldn't eat it. I think that makes sense. As a homemaker, I try to serve REAL food more often to avoid the hazards of food additives. But admittedly we still consume processed foods every now and then. Much of the leafy greens that we eat, we grow in our backyard. I'm thankful that my young kids eat vegetables and often choose fish and veggies over meat.

I wish I had a garden of my own. I used to be able to work in the garden but I just can't manage it anymore. I've been thinking about doing a container garden. I've got all the instructions. I just haven't tried it yet. Maybe I will try it this Spring, at least a couple vegetables, like peppers and tomatoes.

@IreneVincent We do container gardening as well. Thankfully many vegetables/plants are able to thrive in containers, like herbs and leafy greens (kale and spinach). Many of our chili peppers are also grown in pots and they yield a lot. With container gardening, however, you will have to diligently water your plants at least twice a day.

@almostoveryou Thanks for the tip. My brother sent me some information about container gardens and he sent some photos about how to set up the containers so that they could receive water to the roots by way of a tube that is placed in the side of the container, so you can send water through the tube from the top. It seems like a good idea.

Many of us don't want to know what goes into food! I try to avoid as much processed food as I can, but it is so tempting!

Yes, processed food is the worst. I am a cancer survivor and my herbalist told me the FIVE things I should avoid. Red meat, sugar, dairy, fast food and processed food. Your body can handle those things if you only eat them once in a while, but not a steady diet of any of them.

Over a year ago I entered a contest for a trip to Hawaii. As it turned out, you had to have a certain number of points earned on the site to enter the contest. Now I'm on there every day amassing points for the next big giveaway. Anyway, one of the way we get points is by searching for geckos on different pages. One of the pages about food shows this piece of food that I see all the time but only looked at the ingredients a couple of days ago. It looked a little like a sushi roll as it was stuffed with rice and wrapped with rice paper, but on top of the rice was spam! Yup, a staple in Hawaii. I can't afford to buy organic food. The cost is double the price of non-organic.

Organic food is more expensive but it may be worth the price. On the other hand, how can we be sure?

I used to Spam as a kid and never cared for it. No ketchup on cottage cheese for me! I stopped eating hot dogs years ago as they are a poor diet food.
