We now have 24 new 'pets'

United States

At least we don't have to feed them or pick up after them...after all fish are self-sufficient! We went back to the 'fish farm' and got our 24 bream. They are bigger than we thought they would be. Some are 5-6 inches long. They were very active - but when they saw the muddy pond they are going to live in they weren't impressed. Ruby, on the other hand, was fascinated by them! I thought she was going to stick her head in and get one! Bream are members of the European Cyprinidae family of fresh water fish. They are, oddly enough, related to goldfish and carp. We have two huge grass eating carp in the pond, they are at least three feet long. I hope the bream don't get that big! Oops, I just looked up more information on bream and our little 6 inch fish will grow to be 1-2 feet long (or more) and it sounds like they are fun to catch. Photo is mine.
The word "bream" primarily refers to the "common bream," a member of the family Cyprinidae, which is a European freshwater fish related to goldfish, minnows, and carp. In the United States, "bream" is also used as a catchall term for...

@AbbyGreenhill I knew that catfish eat smaller fishes, those you bought seem big enough to be safe.

They sure were active! My husband asked the guy about catfish eating other pond fish. He said they would eat very small fish like minnows. He said the fish we just bought they would not eat.

We just rehomed all of the fish in our pond. Good luck with the newbies, I hope that they adjust well to their new environment.

@AbbyGreenhill That is actually a good sign. Every time we introduced new fish to our pond, they would play hide and seek, and do a really good job of it, for the first few days.
