What punishment would you allot to someone who was found guilty of 178 counts of Animal Cruelty? Well apparently in my county of Freestone; not even a slap on the hand. A small dog breeder who has been in 'business' for 24 years got a fine of $211. 00. The Humane Society of North Texas took all the dogs in for medical care and future adoption at a cost of $23,126; which the owners are told they have to reimburse. All of the animals had: external parasites, intestinal parasites, were under-weight, matted coats, hookworms, tapeworms, eye infections, skin infections, periodontal diseases and overgrown toenails growing into the pads of their feet. The most disgusting part of it all was the statement that the Sheriff made regarding the punishment phase: "I hope this is a warning for residents in Freestone County that Animal Cruelty will not be tolerated." Seriously?????? You think a lousy $211 in court fines is an example of stopping this type of crime??? Oh yeah, and good luck on getting these lousy people to pay the HSNT back for all the medical bills. I am sooooooo mad I could scream!!!!!

It is not only $211 it is also $23126 more to reimburse, but, yes, it is nothing. In this case in my country the court would have aggregated the sentence : committing 1 or 200 times the same crime in the same place is always considered like 1 crime. The maximum penalty for animal cruelty is 2 years of jail, and I suppose it is what he would have got+a prohibition to breed any animal in the future.

@nanette64 There is no forced labor in our jails, and sadly quite no job to offer to prisoners wanting to work, due to the bad economy actually. I say sadly, because when they work 20% is used to pay damages to their victims...

@topffer Maybe plowing and planting a corn field with all the sold proceeds going to help the victims. And if the prisoner tries to make a run for it; let the guards shoot them.

I would at least be happy with a 2-year jail term @topffer with hard labor.

So the Sheriff consider that $211 fine is a "serious punishment"? This is ridiculous.

My judgement would be: locked in a room with them for 5 minutes with a baseball bat @LadyDuck .

$211 for what they did? I got a $175 fine for not immobilising my wheels completely when I made a stop. If that is supposed to be a joke, I hope the sheriff realises that we are not laughing.

How terrible. Here now they are sentencing someone to three years in Jail but what they did to the animals was really dreadful. Any kind of cruelty is dreadful but this one person went way past that and so now the Law has clamped down on them.

@nanette64 Yes three whole years in Jail although they want to give them extra time for what they did. So donĀ“t know the end result yet but they will be in for a long haul.

But wait, do they have to pay the cost of the transport to the humane society? Still and all that is not an example of justice Wish someone would treat them as they treated those animals.

The $23,000 is just for the medical care of the animals @TiarasOceanView . I think a 4x4 cage would be just about right.

And they wonder why this kind of behavior continues @hostessman . I wrote a post on Thursday and Friday. I guess they just weren't very interesting.

That is ridiculous and makes me so angry. It happens far to often and all they get is a slap on the wrist.
