My View Around Noon Today

The photo accompanying this post was my view this morning just before noon of the sound as seen from the south end of Wrightsville Beach. In my youth, I spent many days fishing and hanging out with friends here and off to the left on the ocean side of the island. Getting to spend a couple of hours there today brought back lots of fond memories. This site is also part of the setting for my River Dream books. My main character's family house would have been just a few hundred feet to the right of where I was sitting when I took this picture. He would have sailed his boat right past this spot on numerous occasions. While my wife does like spending time on the beach here, she is not a fan of the crowds and traffic in the area. I would love to be able to retire near this spot and, unless I absolutely had to, never leave the island again.

Looks purdy. Was it warm there? It was cool here today but I was still in shorts and flip-flops.

It was about 72F while we were at the beach, with a nice breeze.

That is a beautiful spot! I can see why you use it as part of your setting in your books and definitely understand why you'd love to retire there.

I may be more at home sitting there in a beach chair than I am anywhere else on Earth.

Sounds just about perfect! I am also getting tired of people and crowds, but unfortunately so many fun things must be done in crowded places, such as a theater production or a favorite restaurant.

@DWDavis I couldn't lock myself away forever. I like excitement once in awhile. But maybe someday when the kids are older I will want a quieter, more secluded life.

I would love to spend this summer in a lonely college on a secluded beach writing and writing.

This sure is paradise on earth. How developed is the Island?

@DWDavis Man never learns. Concrete jungles everywhere, with animals displaced. I feel emotional when I see peacocks roaming the streets.

The whole island is developed to the hilt, except this area at the south end. The north end of the island used to have several undeveloped acres, but some greed heads convinced the Town Council to let them build a resort hotel there, and destroyed the whole ambiance of that end of the island. What they hadn't counted on was these barrier islands are migrating south and the island nearly washed out from under the resort. Then the taxpayers wound up footing the bill to save the resort. If it were up to me, I'd have let it wash out to sea.

The crowds and traffic are not my favorite things, but the beach is just a great place.

When I grew up there, the only time there was a traffic backup was when they raised the drawbridge. Now the whole area has grown so that there is traffic all the time.

@PatZAnthony The county my father and mother live in had only one traffic light until a couple years ago when a second was added. My father joked that it was time to move because the area was getting too crowded.

I grew up near the beach, and feel most at home where I can hear the waves.

@DWDavis Although I am a city boy, I like the sides of the countryside - especially the foxes calling in the wee small hours

Growing up, my friends and I would spend hours there fishing and talking. If you know the Alan Jackson song Chattahoochee, this spot was our Chattahoochee.

So how do you get to the island? Is there a bridge? A ferry?

You cross a drawbridge over the intercoastal waterway and then a second bridge over the sound.

I know I won't retire there, for two reasons, my wife, and the cost. But a man can dream.

Nice picture. I agree with your wife about crowds. Too many people get in the way of relaxing.
