New One pound coin comes into circulation today!

Today the Royal mint have issued a new one pound coin. The reason for this is to prevent forgery. The current one pound coin we use in the UK has been in circulation since 1983 and the final date for its withdrawal will be in October 2017. The reason for the change is because it is estimated that there is around £45 million pounds approximately $56 million or 51 Million Euros in circulation that are forgeries. Counterfeiters have become too clever for their own boots so the new coin has quite a few new features which will make it harder to copy. 1. The coin will have 12 sides for starters. Similar to the old three penny piece. 2. It is made of two metals a brass outer edge with silver inner centre. 3. There is a hologram which when moving the coin will show the £1 sign to number 1. 4. Around the outer edge of the coin will be small writing stating One Pound. 5. There are groves on some of the outer edges opposite each other. 6. A high security feature has been added to the coin which has not been announced. The front of the coin depicts the Queens head. On the reverse the date of issue and the four symbols of the four countries that make up Great Britain. The Rose, Thistle,Shamrock and Leek for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The four symbols are held within a Crown. When I was much younger we had one pound notes. Obviously the coins will last a lot longer than notes. Some wags who have managed to get hold of them today have offered them for sale on Ebay for £50 each. Talk about inflation and imagination. I think we are going to like this new coin. Later in the year the old £5 note will be phased out and a new £10 note introduced. So those of you in the UK. Look down the side of your sofas, empty your money boxes and spend them as they won't be around for much longer!

I didn't know that coins were forged, too. I thought only bank notes were.

There is a roaring trade in forged 1 and 2 euro coins too...
Italian police on Friday seized 556,000 euros ($692,000) in fake euro coins minted in China from a ship container in the port city of Naples, investigators said.

I have a question about ... "The Rose, Thistle, Leek and Shamrock for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. " Obviously the Rose (Tudor) for England, The Thistle for Scotland but then you said Leek for Northern Ireland and Shamrock For Wales. Should it not be The Leek for Wales? And The Shamrock for Northern Ireland? Another question... Do you not have a "note" (paper money) for the pound? We have a Silver Dollar here, but we also have the paper $1.00 bill.

What I want to know is how will we get the supermarket trolleys to work and how on earth do we pay Oxford's extortionate parking fees at the meter now. Did anyone else suddenly get a wave of nostalgia for the threepenny bit? You wil understand if you ever used old money.

@jackalyn go cashless and use Mobile wallet and/or plastic money instead of cash, as has been promoted in India recently!

That is a sneaky way of getting people to spend, isn't it? Cheaper to reduce the VAT on commodities and accept some forgeries...?

@garymarsh6 I'll bet the "top secret feature" is known within 6months... Then the forgers will be at it again. Get rid of cash altogether. I say.

What £45 million of forgeries. It will be incredibly difficult to reproduce the new design.

Do you have a deadline to "spend" the old coins as the government probably wants them out of circulation.

Sometime in October, as Gary mentioned, marks the end of the old style pound coin. Many coin slots still have to be converted in parking meters, shopping trolleys, etc, to accept the new coin.

Shopping trolleys should take the new coin some parking meters should be ok it is vending machines that might not accept it without being adapted. October 2017 is the final date to spend them although if you had lots you could make a trip to the bank of England in London and change them after that date.

I think counterfeiters are very skilled persons - it is a pity their talent isn't put to better use.

Very true but these are professionals. The most lucrative currency that is counterfeited is the $100 us bill.

Well, we in India experienced a very big de-monetisation exercise of INR 500 and 1000 notes. It was a massive exercise, and combating forged currencies that were also used for aiding terrorists was one of the main reasons. Currency forging has turned very sophisticated, and it is highly possible that Military intelligence of some countries do try to come up with newer techniques to forge currencies. Anyways, the coin looks good, and may be for a few years, we would not see much of forgery.

Oh thanks for the heads up...I have the Euro coins ...now I need to collect pounds and especially the ones that are being phased out. I am inclined to believe that this one pound coin will be rare coin as the queen is too old and after her, the new one pound that will be minted, would have the new queen's face on it. So these coins can be considered as limited edition and collected. I know I should not be speculating about your Queen's health. But as collector, it is worth accumulating these coins for posterity. :)
