COULD YOU HANDLE IT?

They call and give their opinions on everything -- from politics, religion and government policies - to the weather , food and the latest world news. Some are quite reasonable - while others simply want to vent and may become abusive before the call is quickly terminated. I am talking here about the morning call -in programs where the hosts must exhibit great patience and tact - and should also possess a thick skin --those who are thin skinned won't stand a chance. Some callers give their views and can become very miffed if the host is not of like mind. There was one host who I admired a lot. He was very knowledgeable and never let anyone brow-beat or get the better of him. I know I could never handle a job like that - even though I can be diplomatic - that would be up to a point. Even here on Mylot one has to exhibit some measure of diplomacy when dealing with some responses. Do you think you can handle a job where you discuss, politics, religion etc, with callers from all walks of life? How do you deal with obstinate and sometimes rude people?

My rule of thumb is if I had a talk show on radio or television is that if you use profane language, you will asked to take a shower and wash out your mouth with hot soapy water.

@Kandae11 My beef with some sports talk shows host is that if you insult their darlings sports stars even if I have in my opinion is true about them, then the host will ban me for from his or her show.

There is usually a minute before the words actually reach the ears of the public - therefore the opportunity is there to nip it in the bud before that happens - the call can also be terminated.

It is not an easy job to attend callers from all walks of life because there are many who talk out of context and don't talk to the point. If I am handling such a call it will be difficult to deal with all the callers.

I could not do that job, I am pretty pushy about politics, I avoid talks of religion, and no one knows what the weather will do... It might be fun to listen too though...

If I have a choice I prefer not too. It's way to exhausting. However if it is my job and I am paid handsomely, I am diplomacy itself.

Good for you. It would take too much of a toll on me mentally - but there are many who would take that job - gladly.

@Kandae11 Teaching is like that...you have to absorb a lot of tension...you have to have tremendous mental strength.

@Kandae11 seriously, I cannot handle it, despite having better patience levels. I'll just end up shouting even louder, and spoiling my health :( Wonder how they handle that...

I understand -- you will feel it necessary to give your honest opinion - and that might not go down well with some callers.

I couldn't do it either - but that one host I mentioned , I think some of the callers were actually scared of him.

one must have a well-rounded personality in order to explain anything the employer wants to ask from him, the applicant. same is true, here, i have to know some things as regards the discussions of those i like and comment on.

While this is not the same, I did work in the customer service for awhile and had similar people to deal with. You do develop a thick skin and for those who can't handle it hen they are probably in the wrong job.

I spent years litening to phone-in shows and I now find them.almost unbearable. No issue can ever be resolved by them and very few hosts manage to come across as unbiased, even if they are meant to be.

You are so right. Very often they are accused of being biased, when they are simply trying to be balanced.

LOL, yes I am thick skinned because I have been a landlady since 1995, actually I can be rude at times when people try to take advantage of me. For the most part though I use the law to set unruly people back into their place. As far as religion and politics no one will ever be right, because everyone thinks their opinion if the correct response. No I would not work that job, nor would I work a few other jobs.

I am a bit thin skinned - not too much, but I try to be diplomatic, and I do know that the best thing for me would be to steer clear of a job like that. Yes, one must be very firm to be able to successfully handle the job of a landlady.
