Preparing for a hot summer

Today was very warm, although it was also very windy! I sat outside for quite some time enjoying the warm air as I waited for my niece to arrive when suddenly the wind swooped in and tossed my long hair around so much that I looked like I've lived in a wind tunnel all my life. And I never realized how bad it was until my niece left and I went in to take a shower and got a gander of myself in the mirror. YIKES! Other residents of our building were outside at the same time and there's one guy who seems to know everything about this building (including all the gossip). He mentioned how hot it was up in his apartment and he wanted to run the a/c but he was going to be out all day. And that brought up my questions, being that I was here last summer with no a/c (and almost died). So now that I have the air conditioner, I'll be going on the installation list around May 1st and then the guys will come in to install My neighbor today said first installation is $35 because they have to drill holes and put up plexiglass. After that, we pay a flat $70 fee, or we can pay installments from March until September of $10/month. Sounds reasonable to me. Then I can run it as much as I need and as much to try and get the bedroom cooled off even though it's around the corner. Depending on animal vet costs, I should be able to afford this And if there's a big problem, I will have to do more checking for help. Or find some kind rich person to adopt me and pay all my expenses. Anyone wanna make bets on that one? (I'm not a petite blonde, let's just say that much). All I know is that it's pretty hot already right now, so once that air conditioner goes in I won't be having them remove it year to year. Then I can run it on those warm days that just pop up! Do you have a/c in all year long or do you have to install it this time of year? Just being nosy! Claudia

I don't have an air conditioner. It gets pretty hot in here sometimes. We just use fans. We don't have them at work either. It will be nice for you once you get it hooked up.

I tried it without ac last summer. Well, I didn't have the money to buy one last year, truth be told. And I suffered for it. I had fans going like crazy. And watching my cat suffer in the extreme heat bothered me even more. It will be a nice change to have some cool air in here this summer. Then at least, after I've gone out somewhere, I won't even mind coming home! lol

Hope you're able to get the A/C you want. We have reverse A/C but rarely run it at any time. But it's marvellous when you do need it.

I have my ac unit already. The box is taking up huge space in my apartment! One of the other residents told me that every autumn we can have maintenance come and remove the units from our windows, but I don't think I'll have a place to store it. So I'll probably just leave it in the window all year long. Then, if we have a hot autumn day, I can still run the ac. So tell me about this reverse a/c. I'm not sure I've heard of this.

@CRK109 It must sit in the roof space I think. It is only the one outlet in our big lounge which open-plans to the kitchen. So it blows warm air in winter and cold air in summer. We have two big fans which circulate and push the hot air down. That's about it really. Mostly in winter we light the tile fire and that is very effective. too. We don't run the A/C much at all.

I have central air heat/AC with a heat pump. I actually turned it on for a few hours today..basically to try it out..it seems to be working OK. I could not go without AC here..it would be awful.

My niece was telling me that her central air is having problems so she's already called the company to come in and get it fixed. She has severe asthma and has to use oxygen and can't breathe if it's too hot. So I hope they get themselves over there to get it fixed for her and soon!

AC is so important that you are looking for some one who can adopt you to bear you expenses, strange.

Well, thankfully, since I lost my home and my husband, I've been living in an apartment for low income people and families and they actually take pretty good care of us. I've been blessed to find this place.

I have had the ac on quite a few times the last two weeks - it usually runs april to october non stop. I could not live int he south w/o central air.

when I visited Texas one winter (February) with my late husband to visit his family, I could not believe how hot and humid it was there! I practically lived in his sister's car with the a/c running! So yes, I understand how living in the south is a place that NEED air conditioning! Stay cool, my friend!

Luckily, in this part of the world I don't feel the need for an A?C unit. Maybe one day a year!

Wow that's fabulous! I've always said I'd love to live somewhere that it's pretty mild most of the time. And now that I could actually pick up and move if I really wanted to, I'm going to stay put. lol Summer here, without ac, can be a little too brutal for words.

Thanks, Judy! I have my ac unit already. It's sitting in a box behind me now and once I'm on the list for maintenance to come (May 1st), they will get it all installed for me.

No a/c in our house. We are rural. The prevailing wind seems to keep the air moving. We have a lot of trees. It also seems to take a long time for the house to really warm up in the summer.

Now see, I'd love to live in a place like that in summer. I've always been the kind of person who doesn't mind bundling up in winter, but in the brutal heat of summer, you can only take off so many clothes to get relief! Your place sounds pretty perfect!

We only leave ours in for about a month, but thats because its in the living room window, and these windows people can open from the outside as long as they arent latched. So we dont trust it for even the month, nevermind longer. My boyfriend puts it in for us though. So no installing fee.

oh my gosh, that's horrible that people can open your windows from outside! I guess that's one good thing about me living on the 13th floor! lol No one can reach me! Well, Spiderman, but I don't think he'll be a problem this summer! I hope you have a cool summer so you can keep those windows latched!
