Don't Ever Hitch-hike

I've mentioned that I've had more lives than a cat. At age 15, I was on my way to work when the car had not one flat tire, but two. I was only two miles from work and even though it was raining, I started walking. About that time a car pulls over and the guy asks if I need a lift. I said yes and got in the car. The first thing I noticed was a baton in a holder in front of the dashboard. I thought he must have been an off-duty police officer. Yeah right!!! Until he reached over and grabbed my hooters and crotch. I looked him in the eyes at that point and realized that this guy was a nut job and told him to pull over. He kept on driving and passed my place of work. Now I'm scared spitless. I tried to open the car door and it wouldn't budge. I asked him again to pull over. Nope. I grabbed the door handle and smashed my shoulder into the door and when it flew open, I flew out the door and rolled down the concrete and into the ditch. Trust me when I tell you that before I even stopped rolling, I was up on my feet and running full speed back towards my job. Once through the door, I collapsed onto the floor and the waitresses came a'running. They called the police but they never found the guy. My Daddy had always told me, "Never, ever, hitch-hike." That two miles could have been my death. In future similar situations, trust me, I walked the distance.

Hitch hiking was never been a thing in our place. And I rather walk too than hitch hike. Too many scary movies and watching Criminal minds made me not want to do it too. I'm glad your okay. There's a lot of crazy people now a days.

@nanette64 When I was little too. It is safer and if there is someone not right with their minds, they were few. And most of the time you can tell. Not like now. They looked decent you wont suspect anything until its too late.

I believe that hitch hiking and riding in box cars is against the law in some states. As we say in Louisiana "You dodged a bullet."

It's terrible that there are evil people like that! I have never hitchhiked myself but have picked up plenty in my life. I always felt that If I don't pick them up some creep might and I wouldn't want to read a bad story when I could have picked them up. I never had a problem but I don't recommend it.

@nanette64 It's a tough play to make between being a good Samaritan and being a victim of a crime.

After that one incident, I never hitch-hiked again @Nawsheen . I even walked several miles during a blizzard once vs accepting a ride.

@nanette64 nowadays they even trick children. There was an incident here in my country where a man came to pick up a child from school pretending that the child's mother had asked him to do it. The child sensed that something was wrong and did not go into the van. Here is a link to the article if you want to read it
The “black van” rumour might be real, given the number of accounts that have been related lately. Many individuals from villages in the south of Mauritius affirm having been victim of a…

You had a terrible experience with hitch hiking, that's for sure. I'm happy that you at least made it out alive. Well, I guess hitch hiking is pretty bad now a days, you never know if it's going to be your end.

That is one terrifying story and I hope that people heed the warning. It's amazing the things we did when we were in our teens and we live to talk about it now!! So glad that you managed to get that door open!!

I think true fear is the only thing that gave me the strength to open that door @Hate2Iron . Yeah, I'm amazed I've managed to make it to 65 years old.

That is why I've never, ever hitch-hiked. Was it legal for you to drive a car as a 15 year-old? You have to be 17 here.

In the state of Iowa because it was mostly an agricultural state, you could get your full licence at 15 @jaboUK .

I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you escaped, too!! When I started driving (this was way back in 1978, mind you, before the days of cell phones) my mother insisted that I always have two dimes in the car...one to call AAA, and one to call home, in case something happened.

This would have been in 1966 for me @FourWalls . Since this was along a highway, there were no pay phones. Since Mom was already at work (same location I was going to) and Dad no longer lived with us; I was pretty much screwed.
