A Long-Lost Letter Comes to Light

Australia and some other nations celebrated Anzac Day on April 25th. Anzac stands for 'Australian and New Zealand Army Corps'. Anzac Day was originally to honour our service men and women who fought at Gallipoli during World War I. It seems each year around this time, something interesting comes to light. A few years ago, Louise Williams, a Sydney writer and editor, received a yellowed tattered letter dated May 14, 1944. It was written by her grandmother to her son John, Louise's uncle. The envelope was addressed to Australian Prisoner of War No 838. John was thought to be incarcerated in the Nazi 'escape proof' camp, Stalag Luft III. However some six weeks before the letter was written, John had escaped with 75 others. However he was later captured and executed. The letter meanwhile had been sent to the RAF in India, with postal officials hoping John might have been reposted there. Finally it made its way back to Australia, only to be accidently thrown out during a clean-up after floods. At the rubbish tip, the letter was picked up by someone who recognised the name of the POW camp. It was kept until a Foreign Correspondent segment shown on TV made the finder realise what he had found. There is, of course, much more to the story. I've included a link to the article and it's worth reading Wikipedia's entry on Stalag Luft III. What the captives managed to steal from the camp is quite amazing. And the professions of some of the inmates makes fascinating reading too. The story of the escape made a great film, The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen. However there were NO Americans who escaped through the tunnel. The photo is of the statue, situated at Albany, Western Australia, honouring the soldiers of the First World War.
Almost 73 years after a mother mailed a letter to her son John, who was a Prisoner of War under Nazi regime, a coincidence sees the envelope returned to the family.

What a great tale this is. I recall the movie. I suppose they had to put some Americans in it to sell it. McQueen was a good one.

Well that explains ANZAC. I'm on an Australian Facebook page where people post photos of their bikes leaning on stuff. A few ANZAC posts the last couple of days. I didn't know what it was.

Virtually every town, big and small, in Australia has a memorial to the Anzacs and other soldiers. Anzac Day might include dawn services, parades, bands, Last Post and Reveille, and flags at half-mast. Nowadays more and more make the journey to Turkey and France for Anzac Day services where Australia lost most of their young men.

I know little bits of our own war history but not a lot about the involvement of other countries. I guess it is the same for most of us.

Such a heartbreaking time for everyone involved. Imagine being on the receiving end of the news that such a letter was found? Will have to use the link to see who was there to learn the news.

It is a holiday in Italy the 25th of April, "Liberation Day", commemorating the end of Nazi occupation of the country during World War II.

Love that story. I like Steve Mc Queen. I have attended several dawn services here, but I didn't go this time as it was raining... but had the TV going on with the ceremonies here and overseas.

It seems it quite often rains on Anzac Day. We have marched in the rain before today when we were in the brass band.

It is amazing how they managed to dig such a tunnel under those circumstances. There was an inventory done after the tunnel was discovered. Missing were, among other things, 90 complete double bunk beds, 635 mattresses, 52 twenty-man tables, 76 benches, 1,212 bed bolsters, 1,700 blankets and 3424 towels.

Honoring those men and women who fought all the wars of our planet is such a special thing to do. Their descendants certainly need to know that their family members did not die in vain and that someone still cares.

At one point they thought Anzac Day would die out but each year there are more and more people who turn out to honour the veterans.

Me either. If the decision-makers had to actually fight the wars there might be a few less.
