The first cruise ship of the season docked this morning.

Our first ship is by Holland America and the name of the ship is Veendam. There are 1200 passengers. It is docked right down the street from where I work so there are lots a tourists walking up and down and streets and checking out the many sites. We have a music festival going on. The East Coast Music Awards are happening so there are lots of artists performing at various venues throughout the city. It rained all morning but it is starting to brighten up out there now so at least they can enjoy their day without getting too wet. This Cruise ship season there will be over 60 ships visiting our city. There are lots of days that there will be two ships in port and several days where there will be three. Each passenger is personally welcomed as they step off the ship. Women are given a rose and the men receive lapel pins with our city crest. They love coming here and always have many great things to say about our city and the people here. It is nice to see the streets filled with tourists and you get to meet the nicest people from all over. I have never been on a cruise but not sure if it is something I would enjoy. Have you ever been on a cruise? Do you live in a place where cruise ships dock?

There are cruise ships? They travel the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River?

Yes, @JohnRoberts there are River Boat Cruises. They sail also on the Mississippi River & over in Europe they will sail on the Danube. I have never taken one of those cruises, but it sounds like it would be fun.

I have been on a cruise by Sovereign of the Seas. It was a dream come true. The cruise was to Bahamas. We were not welcomed with a rose but were taken good care of. It was part of our US package tour.

I'd love to see all these ships. I love big ships. Yet, a cruise doesn't appeal to me.

@Happy2BeMe every now and then my husband mentions going on one, but I prefer the idea of going to just one place and really getting to know it thoroughly rather than rushing around for a few hours in several places.

I have been on 3 Cruises. The first one was in 1988. It was on The Princess Cruise Line and it was an Alaskan Cruise. The second one was in 2007 aboard The Carnival Celebration and it sailed to the Bahamas. The 3rd one was last year and it was aboard the Norwegian Dawn and it sailed to Bermuda.

No, I've never been on a cruise ship, nor seen one up close like you have. I hope that the visitors enjoy what they see and experience in your city. Your rain quit, but it came here-I ran out for a couple of hours and left the windows open......big mistake!

That must be fun for you and the tourists. I have been on a couple of cruises, but not recently. I have lived in areas where local cruises took place..but not big ones..I used to live near Alexandria..and there are a lot of local tour boats that go up and down the Potomac.

That is a very interesting info and I feel the excitement you have for a moment near your work force. How nice to see people from other places. I live far from the port thought we live near the sea. The passage of big ships cannot be seen at home so far we live near beaches

@Happy2BeMe I cannot find a big ship passing. Lat years ago when I was a teen I saw a big ship stranded at the middle of the sea of Camiguin island.
