Back-Packers and Origami Roses

We have had two young German back-packers with us for the last two nights. We met the girl and her parents in the Northern Territory, Australia, last year and gave her our contact details in case she ever made it to the west. Two days ago, she got in touch and arrived with her travelling companion who is also from Germany. He has a car which he will now try to sell as he is due to go back to Germany in a few weeks. We have enjoyed having them. Although only 19, Anna is very knowledgeable on a range of subjects and has talked politics and education with Vince ad nauseum. Vince took them to Gnomesville yesterday while I was at the dentist and last night we played Quirkle. Their clothes are now all clean again as is their car. I also came out of cooking 'exile' and made a yummy steamed pudding for dinner last night. Anna also tried to teach us to make origami roses, none of which can be shown to the public! The photo is of Anna's much nicer ones. She says we just need more practice but I have my doubts that that would help. We have thoroughly enjoyed having them. They have been a breath of fresh air.

I just showed my little son those origami roses . . . he wants to make them now (he has a great interest in origami!). I've done it all my life but have never seen these roses - how cool - I'll have to see if there are instructions online! How wonderful you guys took in these nice young guests - seems everyone had a pleasant time!

Anna said she learnt from a YouTube clip. We didn't find it very easy but hers came out very nicely. We thoroughly enjoyed their stay thanks.

@JudyEv I'll definitely have to look for it then! I've been doing origami all my life - I know people who have not done it much will say it's difficult but to me it isn't. But I haven't done this one - so we'll see!!

@much2say If you've had a bit of practice, I'm sure you'll manage this.

How nice that you had room for her. Origami roses would be fun to make if one had the talent. Not so sure here.

@JudyEv Many creative people would understand just what you mean! We don't want to 'stay between the lines' all the time.

I don't have the patience I'm afraid. And the paper has to be folded so precisely which goes against my nature too.

There are only a few things that I can make with napkins, I am not patient enough for origami, but those roses look great.

I have a book of napkin folds but I'm not good at the fancy ones. Origami is even harder to do.

@CRK109 Most of the young people we've had have been pretty good. We only ever had one - a Russian - who seemed out for a free ride.

A good company can make a big time enjoyment. Loved the origami, it would have been nice if you had put up one done by you and Vince.

I am not careful enough really - nor do I have the patience for it but it was kind of her to take the trouble to show us.

We got our son an origami book a few weeks back and he liked it he thought it was cool to be able to make things out of paper that moved but his favorite thing was making planes for him and his sister to fly around the house.

You always seem to find such interesting guests, Judy. You or Vince are always in the right place at just the right time! I'm glad they have been finding you, too. I'm quite sure they tell everyone when they get home about the wonderful couple who let them stay for a night or two while they got themselves lined back out again!
