Swimmers Beware! Something to be Aware of When Swimming in Lakes and Oceans

Midland, Michigan

I rarely look around facebook, but I answered a friends request once I figured out who they were and looked at my cousins page. There I found the link shown below about fatalities with swimmers. Those living on lakes and larger bodies of water need to be aware of this to save lives.
“I’ve been around water all my life and I never thought that electricity in a huge body of water like that could do what it did."

@MarshaMusselman I noticed that, there was a hiccup last night - delete one, both comments will go, so happened to me...
Twice in the last half hour I have gotten white page errors from the site and I'm seeing multiple copies of discussions showing up. Is the site having...

@pgntwo Someone must not have like that discussion for it seems to be gone now. If you know who wrote it I can search it out that way. Sometimes they're still around but the link doesn't work anymore.

I don't watch the news so I never hear these things normally. My cousin lives on the lake and I think that's why her facebook friend shared the link with her. Did you write your comment and then lose it? It just so happens that it is here along with this one. I was going to delete it, but I don't know that it really matters since you didn't do it on purpose.

I heard about that case - it was on the radio when I was in my car. Tragic.

It sounds like it might be a fairly common occurrence, but they don't always know what to attribute the deaths to unless others that live felt the jolt too.

This is a tragic event. Many things in life are risky, we cannot prevent everything and we must not stop enjoying life only for the fear of an accident.

Good grief I have never heard of something like that and to be honest would not even give it a thought. Who would unless you are aware of it in the first place. I hope I remember this tip from you! Water and electricity do not mix. Rip to those poor people.

There are so many deaths in Texas due to drowning @MarshaMusselman and 99% of them are because the idiots didn't have a life jacket on. There have already been several so far this year.

Did those events take place when the people were in boats, Nanette?

@nanette64 Pretty sad or stupid when someone on a ski of any type doesn't even have the smarts for a life jacket. THe kids that walked the flooded creek, did they all die or just some of them?

@MarshaMusselman Most of them were. There was one guy on a jet ski. Then you've got the stupid kids who think that walking along a flooding creek is a smart thing.

@MarshaMusselman I have heard of it - I never fish at all - pretty scary what electricity can do in water

I've never heard about that before. Do they do that over your way or have you heard of the practice elsewhere? This was a bit different as they didn't realize there was live current to watch out for.

I see so many scare posts that I could become paranoid. Life has risks...I plan to live my life to the fullest...not sit and the sidelines afraid of the possibilities. A little common sense goes a long way.

I agree. I think it's a good thing to be aware of, I won't be worrying about it or stay out of the water because of it. Also, I wasn't sharing to scare people but to make the possibility known.

@Morleyhunt That's true. I don't believe in the idea that your number comes up, but we can't prevent every possibility and we take far more chances when we're on the road than anywhere else. Since there we can be doing everything right but it's what the other person is or isn't doing that can cause issues, and we can make a bad move too in the wrong situation.

Neither had I considered the possibility before. When he was telling his story, I wondered about the metal ladder, but didn't realize the rest of it.

I don't do much swimming anymore. My brother even has a large pool but mostly the kids and grands belonging to my brother use it. Some of the adults as well, but I've taken my swimsuit in the past only to take it back home dry.

@RubyHawk I would wade in a lake or river if it's clean enough and the weather was right, but I don't bother going into water much any more. Too much trouble. And, it's not easy for me to get up and down even just to dip my feet into the water, so I don't do that either. I wouldn't worry about problems, but it is good to be aware.

@MarshaMusselman I still enjoy swimming in the pool. It's been a long time since I've swam in a lake or river.

It is best to be aware of all the possibilities before entering the sea, river, lake or even the swimming pool.

Good thing the girl's father was there and figured out the problem, but not fast enough to save her. I rarely swim anymore, but will be sure to look out for electrical devices when family is swimming off a dock.

The swimming place we go to sometimes in the summer has a man made beach. They have storm radar and if there is any lightning detected up to 30 miles away they won't allow anyone in the water. There are no docks there but many lakes around here have docks. I hope the owners of those docks are educated about this. I wouldn't think that electric outlets should be anywhere near the water!

I would never have thought there would be anything like that either and maybe it's not common. I don't know what other reasons would cause this phenomenon since not all the situations mentioned in that article were all at the same dock area.

So sad to hear about this. Glad the father shared the story. I had no idea that electric shock drowning could happen in this manner. I will remember this and warn my family and friends.

I have yet to do more research to find out the other ways people get shocked in that manner while in the water. It sounds like it's more common than we thought, but I'm sure it's not all caused by the same things.

Never heard of anything like that - but why would you have an electric point right at the water's edge anyway? Surely everyone knows not to mix electricity and water don't they?

I've no idea and I don't know how common that might be to have an outlet right there near the dock. I do windows for some people that live right on the lake and maybe this summer I will ask if they know why people would have current nearby. Maybe that situation is one in a million, but it sounds like electrocution while in the water isn't such a rare occurrence. Well, maybe sort of rare. I would have to research it to find out the other causes of this phenomenon to know where the live current originates.

@Fleura I would hope by now that swimmers would know to come out of the water when a storm is on the way. Although, I think there are times we might get lightning or even thunder when we've not been aware one was in the vicinity. But, you can usually tell by the skies.

@MarshaMusselman When I first read the headline I thought it was going to say she was swimming when the water was struck by lightning.

It's not so we worry but so we can be aware. If you swim off a dock look around to see if there's anything electrical in the vicinity. If there isn't then you'd have nothing to worry about.

I am not sure about this in particular, but have seen lots of other old stories. There are even new jokes has surfaced about such kind of messages.. here is one about a lost child. that one child has to stop going to school, because few months ago some one posted a message of that child..........and the child returned home very next day. but even after three months people keep taking him back to home thinking he is still lost.
