Ideas for helping those less fortunate?

I just finished A Street Cat Named Bob on Netflix, and I remember following the story when it first broke a while ago. After going through my own struggles with near homelessness (and on the verge again) I spend a lot of time volunteering, donating, and spreading awareness. Sometimes all anyone needs is a helping hand, not $5 and a sandwich. Here in my area the city is working on something called 'tiny houses' which will be available to those in need for ~$1 a square foot on a rent-to-own basis. I love the idea, but I'd love to hear what anyone here thinks that I could spread some awareness about and maybe try to get implemented here, as well as programs that are already in place in your communities that have had success.

In our city there is a social enterprise cafe which allows people to buy a coffee or a meal for a homeless person when buying for themselves. More importantly they taken on staff who are or have been homeless and train them in all aspects of the business while paying them a fair wage. All profits are put into opening new cafes in other cities or local homeless projects. I think it's great that they not only provide a hand out in the form of a hot meal or drink but are also providing a hand up. By giving people the chance to train, earn a wage, gain references they are helping people to break the vicious cycle of homelessness where they can't get a job without an address and can't get a home without a job.

@freya703 I will have to watch that. I'm sorry your struggling! I hope things get better soon! I don't really have any ideas other then to show Christs love to these people and let them know there is hope. Maybe help with getting a bag of toiletries together to hand out to them. This way hopefully they can find a place to at least clean up.
