How Poorly Thought Out

electric meter on my house.

We were going to move our office into one of the two small bedrooms. I loved the idea. Well, we can't. After looking all around we find only one electrical outlet in the intended room. I may look one more time. We have an air conditioner in that room, and we would need a number of outlets for our computer/printer set up. I could pay an electrician to come in and add an outlet or two, but I am not sure we want that expense right now. We are moving one of the big beds into that small bedroom, and then we will put our office in the other big bedroom. That includes all the product hubby sells. Who on earth only puts one outlet in a room?

That's too bad, but its good that you have a plan B you can fall back on. We have just 1 outlet in our spare bedroom here I believe. Its something that they did in the homes built in the 50's.

This one is a 30's house. They have had cable outlets run in, which we do not need. I felt sure there was one on the wall where we have put the a/c but if so it is very well hidden.

@GardenGerty We use power bars in every room, it offers extra outlets and there is the surge protection on the bar as well.

I made a mistake by having more than one outlet in our bedroom. It is misused by guests

I have a power strip plugged into the wall.....and another power strip plugged into that power strip!! There is also another power strip plugged into that power strip that is long so that others can charge from the couch too. We do have 3 outlets in the living room...the one behind the tv has one of those things plugged into it making it like an 8 plus outlet. The one on the other wall be my shelf isn't used much except for my warmer and sometimes one of the kids sit in a chair over there to charge.

I would not want to run an a/c plus two computers, printers and lights off of one power strip or even two. I am too afraid of overloading the circuits.

@GardenGerty No, I wouldn't run air conditioners on a power strip.

That is weird. Usually there is an outlet on every wall. Was this room made after the original structure went up perhaps.

I thought so too, but this house was built in the 30's.

One outlet wouldn't be the norm nowadays would it? What a shame.

It will work fine as a guest room, though.

I have not owned this house long, and it was occupied when we bought it. I may be overlooking one more outlet, but the room has been full of storage. We have had what we needed in the past for the room.

My husband has gotten really good at electrical work and could easily add more outlets. He's had to do that a few times.

@GardenGerty Due to lack of money and a really old house, hubby has had to learn to be handy.

Isn't that a pain, sorry to hear that Heather. I think electrical outlets and designs need to be revised. They always seem to be inconvenient or not enough.

It is an old house. I certainly would have more in a newer home.

@GardenGerty Even in this apt though it is what 80s built they are stupid. Course power surger protectors can help you know the multi plug things?

That would never pass an electrical inspection. We have outlets enough for 12 homes....I'll lend you a few LOL!

I like multiple outlets. I may find myself searching a bit more, but it still is a better move to put the office in the bigger bedroom.

I often use a smaller bedroom as the main one, and save the big main room for the pc room. I think older homes often didnt have enough outlets, as once upon a time so few things needed plugged in!

The small one will be our main guest bedroom now. It makes sense, really.

I am guessing its an older house? My old home place was like that and it was built in the 1940`s As you know I bought several more older houses over the years and one by one I have had to add plug in`s and with that upgrade and add more breakers. In 20 years I have put new wiring in every single one of them, new breaker boxes, some had the over head pull light strings. You should be able to get just plug in`s added and one new breaker for under $500. Like you said, it may not be feasible at the moment.

The house was built in 1930. When we had the two electrical systems joined and the outside brought up to code it cost $800 but it was done correctly.

I had that problem in this house as well. But the house was built in 1900. We had the entire house rewired and more outlets put in. Cost us a fortune but well worth it as there were 4 different types of wiring in this house and some of it was really really old and didn't look good. This is a wood framed house and would have gone up in smoke eventually if we hadn't of spent the money to make sure that didn't happen.

So far all we have had done electrically is to have the two sides joined, as it is a 1930 duplex. I would like two or possibly four outlets on the outside and feel that may be more pressing than a spare bedroom at this time.

Our bedroom is the same there's only one power socket. Probably when most of these places were built very few people would have had anything more than a small reading lamp requiring a plug point in their bedroom.

That is correct. They would not have had the air conditioner that I have in the room, and no computers either.

@GardenGerty What makes me laugh is due to the shape of our main bedroom there is only one place you could logically put a double bed which is in a slightly recessed alcove! Whoever came up with the idea of placing the one wall socket in the one corner where it is covered by the bed really didn't think it through!!

I would be afraid of blowing the breakers. It may be what we end up doing anyway, just for the purpose of cooling.
