The Uffizi art gallery is one of the most important galleries in Italy if not the world. It houses many priceless pieces of art work from the Renaissance period. The building was built in 1560 and finished in 1581 by the Medici family to house the offices of the magistrates. The rooms were furnished with pieces of art work. There is a long narrow courtyard which leads down to the Arno river that flows through Florence. There are covered walkways either side of the courtyard. It is from one of these covered areas that you enter the gallery. Even though we had skip the line tickets we still queued for over an hour to get in. Such is its popularity it is not unknown to queue in the summer months for up to five hours to get in. The tour guide who took us on a whirlwind tour of the gallery only getting seconds to view some of the thousands of art pieces in the museum did not bode well as she seemed bored and in a hurry to rid us as a group. By the end of the tour having seen so much of the art work eventually it all rolled into one. It was all very samey samey such was the period of the time the paintings were created. Notable art works include works by : Michelangelo Botticelli Da Vinci Titian Raphael Caravaggio Rembrandt Goya Rubens Van Dyke Durer There were many other pieces of art work by other famous artists these were just off the top of my head. After three hours my feet were feeling like I wished they did not belong to me. I am pleased I have been there but I doubt I would ever need to go back again. The painting summed up my feeling towards the tour guide and captured my feelings perfectly! This was the last painting we saw at the end of the tour! I could not resist taking this photo.

I went to the Uffizi Gallery a long time ago. I did not watch it properly as I stood enchanted by the paintings of Botticelli and did not have eyes for other things.

@marguicha I spent from 07:00 to 23:00 in the Vatican. It was the best day of my life being in St Peters and the Vatican museum. Oh boy I felt I was in heaven!

That picture does have a lot of feeling in it. I hadn't heard of that art gallery. I'm sorry it was a whirlwind tour and the tour guide was bored with it.

Yes I thought she was a bit rude to be honest having paid for the tour!

The Uffizi is surely my favorite art gallery. While I think that painting was not what Leonardo Da Vinci did best, I love most of the pieces showed there. Religious painting are not my favorite, there are many others that I liked more than this one.

@LadyDuck I know Anna. I found it quite irritating but you can understand who would want to queue for 3-4 hours to get in!

It was nice Anna but I would have preferred to look on my own rather than with Mrs Race horse the tour guide!

Thank you for sharing. I love art and museums. Is the picture a Caravaggio? It is truly lovely in it's use of light

It was a beautiful painting although by time we saw this I was pretty peeved with the guide or rather the racing steward. There were some beautiful exhibits there though!

Wow, that is a wonderful experience even if it was so short! I could look at that photo you took for hours. The way the light from the candle illuminates it is amazing, so realistic, I am stunned at the talent and artistry it must take to do that in oil paints. I could spend days in a place like that gallery!

There were many beautiful pieces there. Too much to take in in such a short time to be honest. It was jammed packed too and they were only letting so many in at a time!

I can't remember if we visited this gallery or not when we were in Florence. It's been years. You are right. When you see so much so fast, it all blends together.

Almost likes opening an art book about a certain period. All the paintings look similar after a while (all are beautiful of course!). At least you were there, seeing those real things with your own eyes.
