Possessions versus experiences

I read an article recently that implied that those who spend their money on experiences are happier than those who choose to buy possessions. I would rather spend spare cash on going out, surfing, snowboarding, biking travel and photography. I feel in doing those things I'm creating memories that will last forever. If I buy the latest tech gadgets they give me pleasure for a few weeks before the novelty wears off. I'm not convinced this makes me any happier or unhappier than anyone else it's just my preference! I have friends who love to shop they always have the latest gadgets or new clothes etc. They seem perfectly happy with their lives. So given the choice which would you choose to spend your spare cash on. Do you prefer buying things or going out and doing your favourite things or trying new experiences

@Essjayd i think if you have extra money, you can buy things for your own use, like a new mobile phone, or pieces of jewelry. it is good investment

@ridingbet I do buy stuff if I need it but I spend cash on the latest gadgets etc. My phone is probably the most expensive gadget I own and it was only replaced after my old one was stolen. We usually just spend our spare cash going out or trips away.

I'm not a great one for shopping so I'd be spending my money on travel and seeing things.

Definitely I actually hate shopping! Some of my friends class it as a hobby!

@Essjayd I only shop when I need stuff. I don't buy things I don't need.

@JudyEv I'm the same even then I put it off for as long as possible! These days I usually just buy something we need online so I don't have to trudge around shops!

Well I will choose spending it in creating memories like travelling with my husband to different countries enjoying different food, seeing different views..etc..because we will all die and you can not bring possessions with you ..so better enjoy it now than never

I couldn't agree more! Enjoying life is far more important to me than filling my life with possessions.

I don't like to have too many possessions, only things that I really need. I enjoy having experiences that make memories. I also like to give to those in need as that makes God happy.

@Essjayd Yes, it is good to give where the money is used wisely to really help those in need.

Well done it's good to help those less fortunate than ourselves. I don't give cash to big charities as I don't trust where the money goes. I do donate both my time and food to the local foodbank as I know everything is truly going to help people in need!

By far if I had the cash to spare, adventurous travel would be my spend. Hands down, you are right, some of those memories in later life are so treasured. I have lots of them.

I agree think our memories will be worth far more to us than any possessions ever could be!

My trip south to Charleston wasn't cheap. We bought experiences. I did end up buying a blouse but mostly our money went to help others- cabs and restaurants and tours.

@Essjayd I do and the cab drivers were interesting. One of them had been born in Egypt. He told us about his little girl and wife.

I always prefer going out and travel. This gives me a lot of pressure than a heap of cash in my table rack.

I agree I can't see the point in having a pile of items I'll hardly use just for the sake of having them!

I don't believe in storing up treasures on earth, so I think I would go for the experiences.

Definitely I'd rather have memories of things I've done than a house full of stuff
