Tired of unwanted phone calls?

Everyone has received a call here and there they just did not want, such as a sales call. Recently it seems there are more advertising calls, Robo calls and more heading our way! Why? Many of us are aware that such calls might be eliminated by listing our phone numbers with a "Do Not Call" Registry, but even that does not always work. We don't usually answer any calls we don't recognize. What do you do to avoid such calls?

We block calls when we can, but sometimes one sneaks through @DianneN because we are expected a call from someone not listed in our phone.

I never answer any calls that I do not recognize. I gave my phone number to a limited number of people and I know who they are. All the others are spammers.

@PatZAnthony Absolutely, it seems that people cannot live without their phones, they even sleep with them and this is very bad for their health.

That's about the only good thing I can say about cell phones--at least you can see who is calling and if you don't know just stop the call.

Yes @GreatMartin love that we can see who it is (in most cases) and just ignore calls we don't want to take.

I don't answer my phone if I don't recognize a number. I put it on silent till it stops ringing or I block that number @PatZAnthony .

Does the DO NOT CALL registry also prosecute these callers if they continue to make a nuisance of themselves. Here we can report them and they will be taken to court and fined.

Some do follow through with efforts to bring charges, but it gets complicated @garymarsh6 so we have never done this.

My husband ignores most calls which can be annoying especially when I've been trying to reach someone. I wish he'd at least answer ones that use the exchange in our city or even the cell numbers we're more familiar with. I've only begun ignoring the odd ones recently, or I'll pick the phone up without answering and if there's a long pause I'll hang up.

@PatZAnthony I do it a lot. A few times someone will finally say hello in an inquisitive voice like they're wondering why I've not said anything yet. I could ask them the same thing. Usually though, it's a recording and they will wait until someone says something before it starts, so if there's a long enough pause, i figure that's what's on the other end. I got that idea from a customer that didn't recognize my name on the caller id. I called his house a couple of years ago to see if they were ready to get their windows cleaned and the husband picked up the phone but held it and didn't put it to his ear I don't think. I could hear them talking in the background, but he never said anything into the phone itself. I hung up and called again. The wife answered that time as she realized who I was and explained what happened. I've begun doing that ever since especially if someone is napping, or I don't want it to go to the answering machine. It gets it over with quick that way.

We no longer have a house phone and that helps. I can block numbers on my cell and I've done that a few times with the real persistent ones.

At Tellwut we recently had a survey regarding this and so many of the respondents mentioned NoMoreRobo. It's something you can download to prevent those annoying robot calls. It's free for landlines and $1.99 a month for cell phones. Unfortunately, I have a very old, basic phone and can't download it.

We normally don't answer calls where we don't recognise the caller ID but we have two family members with private numbers so it gets a bit tricky. Mostly we hope they'll leave a message if it is important.
