Qatar, or the (foot)ball of the hypocrites

I heard this morning an interesting talk show at the radio : should the 2022 world soccer championship may still take place in Qatar ? A few days ago, Saudi Arabia followed by a few Arabic countries around suddenly realized that Qatari camels had a hump and it decided them to tell that Qatar was a terrorist state, threatening it of sanctions. When USA and several European countries having good relations with the Qatar were trying to put out the fire, the great Donald Trump, forgetting that the US has a large military airbase in Qatar, twitted «So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding.. ..extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!» Saudi Arabia telling that Qatar supports terrorism, «it is the hospital making fun of the infirmary» like we say in French. There is no doubt, Saudian camels have also a hump. For example, speaking of soccer, yesterday Saudi players playing a soccer match in Adelaide, have snubbed a minute of silence for the victims of the last London attack before the match. How could they think that this minute was intended to be observed only by Australian players ? If there is a country that will never welcome a refugee fleeing ISIS, it will be Saudi Arabia. If some Arabic countries are quarelling Qatar, it is because Qatar has developped since a few years its own foreign policy and does not support anymore the policy followed by Saudi Arabia and its neighbors. I will not tell that Qatar does not support terrorism, it does, like any wahhabist country does, including Saudi Arabia, but the roots of the quarel have nothing to do with supporting or not supporting terrorism. Coming back to the 2022 world soccer championship, there are 2 options : - to boycott the championship because it is organized in a country supporting terrorism. That would be hypocritical, because Qatar is not the only terrorist country in this area ; - or to continue to be hypocrite our usual way towards these countries of the Gulf which are at the source of the Muslim terrorism in the world and to not boycott it. It offers at least 1 advantage : there would probably be no terrorist attack during this championship in Qatar. Like you see, boycott or not boycott, we would be hypocrites. When it comes to sport and politics, some decisions seem obvious. I am not sure that it is so obvious to boycott Qatar today than it was obvious to boycott South Africa in the 1970’s when it was the last country in the world following an apartheid policy. Your opinion ?

Saudi Arabia bullies who they want because they are rich, bit and with something that every civilized country wants: petrol. All that said, Trump forgot that those who performed the only big terrorist attack in the United States came exactly from Saudi Arabia. Or may be he did not forget, he does not make the difference between an Arabian state and another, they all dress the same after all.

My daughter works in Qatar. I talk to her and they're not worried about other Arab States ganging up on this tiny gulf country. It is one of the richest middle east countries. Their food supplies come from Greece and Turkey. China provides most of their commodities. I think Saudi is using Qatar as a scapegoat offering to Trump's anti-terrorist rhetoric which is just a ploy on Trump's part to drum up business for the military industrial complex.

Many Europeans are also working in Qatar, but it might be not the best place to live actually. I guess that Trump made people in the Pentagon angry with his tweets : a large part of US and French planes bombing ISIS are based in Qatar. I suspect that if Turkey wants to send to Qatar 3 000 soldiers, it is because the US asked Turkey to do it as they would be among the big losers if Qatar was invaded, with France, Germany, and several other EU countries.

@josie_ Saddam invaded Kuwait because he was thinking that the USA were agreeing. If Trump supports the Saudis, they might think the same.

@topffer _I don't think the Saudis will invade Qatar like what Saddam did to Kuwait.

@topffer 15 years in Jail and just for that? It makes things like the noisy neighbours only a very trivial nuisance compared to that. I read something quite moving about the Grenfell Towers in London which gives me faith that we can still all get on in spite of everything.

@lovinangelsinstead21 15 years of jail and a monstruous fee, I do not remember how much, but wearing a shirt of the FC Barcelona in Saudi Arabia can ruin a life. Fortunately they do not have tourist visas, so the risk is low. I heard that the firemen count at least 30 victims in the fire in London now. I would never live in a tower

Any serious, well researched , article I have ever read points to saudi arabia as being one of the states that provides the most money to islamic extremists...other 2 would be iran and pakistan.

Iran is a shiite country, and not responsible for the wave of terrorism we have in Europe (Iran is involved against ISIS and victim of their attacks), but they fund the Hezbollah. One problem of Qatar for its neighbors is to be too friendly with Iran : they fund the Hezbollah, but also the Muslim Brothers on the sunnite side.

@Mike197602 Yes, it is a can of worms. Qatar is now friendly with Iran because he wants to have a pipeline across Syria to the sea.

@topffer that's why I didn't write isis as people do think there is only one terror type group when there are actually a few...and they are also enemies of each other. Iran has had its fingers in pies like lebanon and west bank and also in iraq.

As usual, I don't know enough about this topic in order to comment. It is a sensitive subject whenever it has anything to do with the Middle East. I will return to see how other members comment.

I just saw the newspaper and apparently there is a law passed by the Kingdom of Bahrain which states that's anyone who sympathizes with Qatar in public, social media or any other means will be jailed for a long term. All other Gulf nations likely to follow with this rule.

All these countries, including Qatar, are not the best to live when it comes to liberties and freedom of speech.
