We Survived the TimeShare Presentation

Yesterday we had to attend a two hour presentation about Holiday Inn Vacation Club. Actually, if I was younger, I would consider buying into the plan, I can see how we could benefit from it. But since we are in our twilight years I couldn't see how it would be of benefit to us in particular. We were not pressured in anyway to buy. It was easier than I expected. We never did tour the resort. We were given our $279 back in cash and got a $100 voucher, that part is not what I expected, We can only use it at a Holiday Inn and we need to spend the money and then send the receipt to get our $100. I will only do it if I can find a good deal, we have a year to use it. The entire package cost us about $50 for the tax at the hotel for the 4 night visit. Of course, I spent $300 for two massages for us and $34 to visit The Mount. Dining out cost us about $250 but we did get some really good meals for that amount. I shopped a little at Hancock Shaker Village, who can resist their delicious jams and jellies. Not me. All in all it was a good time, yes the hotel was disappointing but it did not affect our enjoyment of the Berkshires in the least.

As long as you had a wonderful time, it doesn't really matter how little or how much you spend. The Berkshire are beautiful, too. We attended a timeshare event in Williamsburg, Virginia years ago. The place was beautiful and new, right on a gorgeous golf course. We seriously considered buying into it, but the timing wasn't right. We had one son in private school and one ready to leave for college.

Holiday Inn does have a property in Williamsburg as well and I seriously considered taking my 4 days there but it was just easier to go to the Berkshires.

@DianneN Lots of our friends have timeshares either with Marriott or Hilton, since we already own 3 properties, I don't see what we would gain but interim ownership lol What we need is a house in North Carolina so we can stay in our own homes all the way down lol

@BelleStarr The Bershires are much closer. Ours wasn't a Holiday Inn, but it's been too long to remember what it was. My brother has a timeshare in Florida and one in St. Martin. Now that he bought the condo in Florida, he doesn't need it.

Oh that sounds super Belle! What a great deal you got! Yes it is worth it to go on those time share things, I have heard of it. When in my early 40s I nearly bought a time share at Tahoe..thank God I didn't. Though it would have been awesome, things did not work out at that time. Still the visit was nice.

I loved the Massanutten resort in Western Virginia, we went there a year and a half ago and that is one I would love to own. I have never been to Tahoe but have always wanted to go there.

@BelleStarr Oh sounds gorgeous then W. Virginia resort..would love to see that one too Belle. And now I understand in order to visit some of these, you have to have a certain income level is that right Belle? Because when I went to Tahoe..my income was really good then, but not now.

@TiarasOceanView You need to have at least $50,000 but you can buy a week on Skyauction.com for $299 at lots of them and it is a great deal.

sounds like you lost nothing by looking into it all - glad you were not presured - some firms do pressure people into buying

I am not easy to pressure into anything so I wasn't worried and we really knew before we went that we wouldn't be buying.

My husband and I survived a Time Share presentation on the island of Tenerife. We were thrown out in the end because we asked too many precise questions. :-)

@BelleStarr I haven't understood why you got money *back*. You must have paid for something before. What was that?

We have been cornered into a few of those types of vacation deals. Some good and others we backed out! Glad you had fun!

This one was a simple low pressure presentation and I would do this type again anytime for the same deal.

I'm glad you were not pressured to buy a time share. The time shares had a really bad rep for a while. We went to a few presentations when we were younger but the pressure to buy was so of putting that we refused to go on another one. It took a few years for them to realize we were not going to take them up on the offer and quit calling.

Now it isn't so much about buying at a particular resort, it is more about buying into the points which you can transfer to hotel nights or to RCI to travel to resorts that they manage.

@BelleStarr Times have changed. I still don't think I could talk my husband into sitting through the presentation.

There was a time when I ventured to the Berkshires and enjoyed tooling around the area. Now prefer to stay closer to home.

I'm glad you enjoyed it even if the hotel wasn't marvellous. I suppose it's fair enough that they want you to spend the voucher at one of their places.

Yes I just thought it would be across their whole brand, I like Candlewood Suites, it gives a bit more room and a kitchen.

There were many cases of misselling in Europe costing people hundreds and thousands of pounds. There is still a catch in it though you will still spend more if you go and stay at he holiday inn. Not really such a bargain after all

I will make sure it is a good price or I won't use it. We stayed at the Holiday Inn near my friends house in Virginia and the prices there are perhaps $129 so we will only pay the difference after we get the difference. The original deal was good though and they kept their part without issue.

It's great you got your money back plus a voucher to use in the future. It sounds like you had a fun few days. I don't think I could resist the jams and jellies either.

@BelleStarr Sounds very interesting. I tried a Swiss jam - can't think of the name at the moment, on my trip last October and it was very good as well.

We bought a timeshare deal 20 years ago from one of these presentations and since them have received a couple thousand dollars from owner updates to get us to buy more. If someone wants to pay me a couple hundred dollars to sit through a pitch, I am glad to take their money. The last one was a trip to San Francisco with a top notch hotel stay on Fishermans Wharf and we had a blast.
