Everything is so Expensive These Days

I work a couple of days a week in a grocery store so I notice the fluctuations in the retail prices of food. Being a frugal shopper myself but with a love of cooking, I can't help but grimace sometimes. Celery is one of my staple food snacks and I was chagrined to see the price jump from $1.98 a bunch to $2.98 in a week's time. I refused to buy it at that price and swung by Aldi's on my way home where I bought some for $1.58. I don't eat red meat but meat prices have the customers groaning these days. Everything else is going up too. Okay, I'm cheap but I will dish out for certain foods that I expect to pay a little more for (like asparagus and fresh brussel sprouts). And when I can I stop by the local farmer's market. Unfortunately I live in a wooded area so vegetable gardening is limited for me though I do have tomatoes, peppers, onions, eggplant and parsley growing in containers on my garage roof. I also use coupons when I can. (You can find and print out all kinds of coupons on Amazon). Have you noticed food prices rising where you are? Do you use coupons or shop at the discount stores? Some music :))

I plan my menus by what is on special. It's the smart way to shop.

@suziecat7 I can't quite get my husband into menu planning. He does most of the shopping and cooking.

Unfortunately, Food prices are crazy anymore. Makes it really hard to know what you expect to pay anymore. Especially when your Grocery $$ like for me, depends on how my sales are going to what I can afford to buy. Wish food prices could become more stable.

I don't think they'll ever be stable. They always have excuses for the fluctuations.

Yes, it's getting so that I can barely feed myself let along those who depend on me. My DIL and her little girl who were living with me have moved into her mom's so that my future DIL can be here, safe, and deliver her baby when it is time. So I have one less mouth to feed for a few more days then the new baby will hopefully be fed naturally. Good for her, good for her mom, and good for my budget! Everything has gone up, especially meat. I eat less meat and poultry now which is not good for my weight control. Other protein forms like beans have more carbs which means I have more trouble maintaining my weight, forget about losing any! I use turkey in place of hamburger a lot and buy old, half price rotisserie chickens. They are cheaper than buying a whole chicken and already cooked so I don't use utilities to cook it. We are eating more homemade soups because it's just a more pleasant and tasty way to get vegetables (I don't like hardly any of them) and it uses less meat. Dairy products are ridiculous. And I have had to quit buying, for the time being, my favorite free range eggs because they cost over $5 a dozen. Now I have to use eggs from tortured, inhumanely housed hens. I wonder where it will stop? I used to think those stories about seniors eating cat food were fictional but now I'm not so sure I won't be in the same situation!

I do 99% of my grocery shopping at Costco. Not long ago milk jump from $3.96 for 2–gallons to $5.16 for the same 2-gallons in a week's time. But now it has dropped down to $3.76 for the 2–gallons. Prices do seem to be creeping up, though.

We don't have a Costco here but there is a Sam's Club. I like Aldi's for certain things but because I work in a grocery store, I hate to stop at another.

@suziecat7 We don't have an Aldi's here. I take it the grocery store where you work does not give you a discount on what you buy.

Noticed that what you could buy five years ago can fit in one packet instead of five!

@dianadee - Back around the late 1950's we could spend $25 or so and the stuff would fill up the back of the station wagon. Times and prices change. -Gus-

I've noticed here as I do most the shopping. Meats are always high, but around the holidays they usually have good sales. Milk was $3 just 2 years ago, now its $4. Drives me nuts.

Yes everything is so overpriced nowadays and the prices keeps on increasing from year to year. The prices of vegetables have soared up in my country. We just can't buy the same quantity as we used to.

I haven't shopped since the beginning of June so I'll check out the prices when I finally go. I hope the rise in prices isn't too bad.

I use coupons and I try to buy things when they are on sale. We never eat red meat, but it is extremely expensive. I grow tomatoes, peppers, garlic, onions, zucchini, parsley, basil, sage and rosemary in my garden.

It is pretty bad and I do remember the gas fiasco. There's always some excuse, it seems - weather, shortages, etc.I often forget my coupons on the kitchen table :((

@suziecat7 - As to food prices going up, it is noticeable that the food still goes down once it is onto those plates and bowls on the table. -Gus-

Food prices are definitely on the rise where I live. Luckily there are fruit trees and vegetables planted on our land.
