Fasting is going without food and/or water for a period of time. What is the longest you have gone without food? Do you fast? Have you ever fasted? What do you think about fasting? Are there any benefits to fasting? Any hazards? To fast or not to fast? What is your experience with fasting?

There are benefits and hazards. I have fasted often for various reasons. Sometimes religious, sometimes health. There was one month when I was trying a slow detoxifying , so for a month I had breakfast and a light lunch - no other meals or snacks.

@Kandae11 I personally think that 3 days is the maximum unless one is feeling fantastic while fasting. And one should slowly build up to fasting for the 3 days. I would start with 12 hours which should not be too hard, then go to 18 and then to 24, and so on. There is no need to rush. 12 hours is no problem at all for me. I have been doing that for a while. Yesterday, I did 18 and felt really good. Today I ate at 3:30 PM. I will try to go 24 hours but I will only do it if I'm not hungry. I don't believe in forcing it. Are you aware of any fasters in the Bible?

@1hopefulman Yes, but not longer than a day, or maybe two.

I remember i did it twice or thrice. I did it because i wanted to lose some weight but seriously it's really hard, specially when you are a food lover. I'm a foodie person, so i can say that it was hard for me when i did fasting. I really respect those people who can do fasting seriously, it's not an easy task.

Do you have any advice for someone that wants to fast and see what happens?

I used to fast now and then in the 1970s and 80s - but I used vegetable juices, so it was to clean the body. I used to feel good both during the fasting and afterwards.. This way I could fast 5 - 7 days and even longer. I could eat some fresh fruit at times, but I got some energy from the juices.. Some juices were fermented, so they gave good lactic acid bacteria.. Many health people fasted in those years..

I appreciate you relating your experience. An interesting way of doing it. I am presently working on dry fasting which means no food, no water. I want to see how it will go. If you read my response to @Kandae11 you will see how I am doing it.

I only fast on Yom Kippur, our day of atonement during our high holy days. I often get a headache mid afternoon. I have fasted before colonoscopies and lab tests, but those never bothered me. I otherwise have no need to fast.

If I may ask, do Jewish people fast on the Sabbath?

There was a time that I did fast but I started with eating smaller portion of food and it gets less and less too. Its good to fast when you have nothing to do. Just lay in bed or watch tv. After fasting I feel much lighter. But if you have something heavy to do or your busy and needs alot of thinking better not do it (fasting) .

Thanks for sharing your experience! I guess, we all fast every 24-hour day, it only varies by the number of hours. I'm on a 24 hour fast and I have 2 more hours to go and then I will some watermelon to start. I'm not overly hungry. I may do it again at another time.

I don't have much fasting experience and I can't fast. I think thin already and therefore it is easy for me to be hungry if I can't have a meal on time. And I may even feel sweaty and moody when I am hungry. I feel like losing my energy and the feeling is terrible.

I don't really fast these days but in the past, probably 24 hours without food is the longest.

Having experience with this, now that my education has taught me what not to do to improve health, fasting is not for me. Limited food intake would make more sense. No reason to trouble your system by not giving it the nutrients needed to be healthy.

As you know, there are different point of views. I am trying to see if there is some benefit to giving the body a break from eating. I am presently on a 24 hour fast. I feel fine. I've got 2 hours to go before I breakfast. Thanks for sharing your view!

@PatZAnthony Most of the time we overeat and so it is good to let the body rest from eating at times also. It is good to educate ourselves on how to stay healthy as long s possible.

@1hopefulman A fast for one day won't harm most. It is the continued fasting without knowledge that harms some. You mentioned somewhere along the way that you do some Intermittent Fasting. We have found this to be of benefit for those in our circle of friends and family. There have been several studies showing that fasting for a certain amount of days could kill cancer cells. However, other studies show that juicing correctly will also do this. To us, there is no point in suffering hunger (but you seem to be fine with 24 hours) if you can instead have juice for a few days. But, what do we know Felix? We are only human.

The longest I've fasted is three days. There are a number of good health benefits, the biggest being that it detoxes your system.

A delicious pan of pizza, right when I'm trying to fast. I'm hungry right now! I fasted out of necessity and it was good because God called me to fast. Fasting is not easy and I'm still not sure what you are allowed to drink when on a fast. R U allowed to drink or eat light bread or something?

I've thought about fasting but I've never done it. It's supposed to clear the mind and allow a person to focus on what's important, their spiritual health. I've been afraid to do it due to health issues.

Yes, many spiritual people fast. Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Remember we all fast for some period of time. One can try making it a bit longer and see how it goes. I fasted for 20 hours and started at 7 PM last night and went till 3:15 PM today and have eaten only one meal today and drank 8 glasses of water. I just went for a 30 min walk and will be going to do some weights now.

@1hopefulman As a diabetic my meals are regimented. I would love to fast but my doctor would have a fit.
