THE PROPOSAL

Do you remember that special day or night when the love of your life proposed ? Was it , different, expected - or unexpected? And do you think it is right for a woman to pop the question to her long time boyfriend? I was living in the Caribbean - and my boyfriend in the United States that fateful night when he proposed over the telephone. I accepted, though I would have preferred to see him in person when he proposed.

I once told a woman that it ought to be a federal law that a woman must ask a man out who she doesn't know at least once so women can know how nerve racking it is to ask someone out. The woman's reply? "I would never do that!" I don't know about a woman popping "the question" but I have no problem with women asking men out.

@Kandae11 I usually didn't have trouble asking women to dance. One woman said, "Ooh, ick, no!" Most women were nicer than that. Very few turned me down but when they did they simply said, "No thank you." But asking women out was a whole different thing.

When you think of it, there is a lot on men's shoulders. Back in the day it must have been difficult to even ask a woman for a dance - these days some women might do the asking.

Believe it or not, my love never really proposed. We started talking about getting married someday and then we were walking on Main Street and he took me into a jewelry store and we picked an engagement ring, He never really formally asked me!! lol

My (at the time) boyfriend and I went to the wedding of our two friends and at the reception, my (now) husband started talking about where we would live and taking care of bills, etc. Later when he took me home, I said, "Was that a proposal tonight?" He said of course it was! He likes to tease me that he really wasn't asking me to marry him, he was asking me to shack up! That was 52 years ago.

That was beautiful. At the wedding of your friends, he probably decided - why wait? and here you are, still together 52 years later - wonderful.

I'm sure you would have. My proposal came out of the blue on a back road where we had been talking for a couple hours - no hanky panky just talk, when all of a sudden he just asked me. I said yes, but I later said no, and then about a month later he asked again and were married.

@Kandae11 No, I wasn't expecting it. I had a couple days to rethink things and decided it wouldn't be a good idea. A few more dates settled it though.

@just4him Some decisions are easy to make and others need a whole lot of thinking.

Was it a surprise when he asked? The fact that you said yes - then later no it seems to me that you didn't expect him to propose so you weren't prepared with an answer.

"And do you think it is right for a woman to pop the question to her long time boyfriend?" Interesting question! I would want to do it. I think the man should take the lead.

I think so too . When you move away from the norm you are leaving yourself open to take the blame if things go wrong. He can always say "you asked me to marry you, I wasn't thinking of it"

I felt so happy when my hubby then my boyfriend, told me that he wanted us to get married already. After a week, him and his parents went to our house to formally tell my parents. They brought with them foods.

My husband never really proposed traditionally. He did get down on his knee in front of his friends and say what would it take to get you to marry me and I thought just ask me.

Ours was sort of a mutual agreement after we had been together for two years. The big moment was when we decided that Anne was going to move to where I lived to be with me. I believe it is fine for the woman to ask first.
