No Good Deed Is Too Small

If we pay attention, there are many times we can do good for others. It does not have to cost us money. Maybe it does not even have to take very much time. I imagine many of you have let a person go ahead of you in a check out line when they had very few purchases. You have smiled at a child, patted a dog. There is a pretty good chance you did not leap out of bed proclaiming "I shall be nice today". You just naturally are and do not think much about it. I had meant to post about my day at Wal Mart, on the day I forgot my license and could not go driving about. Instead I wrote a post about how badly my day had gone. I did not tell you that I was in the paint and hardware section and this frail looking little old man looked at me and said "Where have the toasters gone?" I told him I would walk with him there, because sometimes the store just confuses me, and we could go together so we would not get lost. He said "sometimes I cannot find my own kitchen". (I know where he lives as it is in the same complex as my sister. I do not know how he could lose his kitchen.) I felt good for helping, and he felt good to be successful at getting a toaster. I was behind a little old lady in the checkout. I remember her white hair, and I noted some of her purchases. She paid, gathered her bags and left. A new cashier was being trained. The experienced cashier mentioned making sure they got all purchases. When I cashed out, there was an extra bag of meats, that belonged to the previous customer. The cashiers said, "well if she does not come back we will take it to the service desk." Not too worried. I looked for her, found her in the parking lot. She did not think it was hers, til I told her what was in the bag. She went in, got it and was saved a second trip on a hot day. My point is that no good deed is insignificant. Especially to the young, and to the elderly. You can do this. I know you can.

It's always good to help others in some way. When I'm out and about I try to look for those in need of help.

I agree with you, there are many occasions when we can do a small act of kindness that costs us nothing and can make someone else's day.

@GardenGerty Last week at the store I let someone go ahead of me and then she was happy to point out a new register opening, instant Karma she called it. Then I was overcharged and had to wait in line at the courtesy booth, and we both laughed about my instant karma lol

I do the same as you Heather. Have often run out behind a customer to let them know they left behind items. Or helped them unload their cart in the rain, and ended up being soaked to the bone.

Good for you! It gives me such a good feeling when I am able to help others. Usually my family comes first I have no money to give to charities but I do try to help where I can. I think the sort of thing you mentioned is just perfect.

@celticeagle That is so simple, but many do not get it. Sometimes, however, it is easier to do that for strangers than for our family.

So many on here are short on money, but rich in heart. Often giving to charity feels anonymous, but an actual good deed is a connection.

@GardenGerty .....Yes, indeed. I focus on my family most. If I am out I do try to be helpful where I can. I live by the golden rule and try to treat others as I would want to be treated.

That was wonderful! I love the way God opens opportunities for us to help others. It's the way I was brought up. It's so good to put a smile on someone's face.

Exactly, we have to be open. It was only later that I realized I was supposed to be there at that time.

I seem to be able to help the seniors in wheelchairs, they will ask me to hand them something, I have climbed shleves to get stuff for them but climing shelves is normal for me, I am 5 foot tall. I am a helper, I am often called on to put in light bulbs because so many are scared of falling.

I always let people go ahead of me in line at the store, if they have less, or if they are older. I know sometimes its the only thing that goes right in someones day.

@Courtlynn I wanted to give him more, but it was a a large bunch of change near $5 in quarters, pennies, etc. I had to get a distance from him while I took out my purse because it is dangerous also to stand there with your purse open like an idiot..So I went away around the corner, came back and handed it to him. He was so grateful as he first thought I had passed him by.
