Double Purpose

Ever think about the purpose of the things that you do? Often times I do but for the most part its an unconscious action that may be helping or hurting someone or something else. For instance : I planted Sunflowers for my viewing of the beauty they give, but also for me and the birds to have seeds to eat. I want to donate money to the Arbor day foundation again and I will also get free trees when I do, I want Maples so I can tap them for syrup. I take in a stray cat and that helps it get love and food, it helps me keep the rats away. And then there are other actions : I make this wonderful product that millions will and can use to help improve their lives but the production process is dumped into the rivers and the air causing damage to people and wildlife. Or when people do not tell someone, even a stranger, that they have spinach in their teeth because they want the person to look bad and themselves to look good. And my favorite: People sucking up to others in order to receive gifts from people, Yes they are comforting with the purpose of getting what they can from someone with a damage self confidence. Maybe some sweet talking man comes along whispering sweet nothings in my ear Knowing all along what he just wants...........Okay I got lost in thought Know what I mean? Or Have I not had enough coffee yet? Photo by Andria Perry

I guess we all do stuff for more than one reason. Although the only thing I can think of that I do is help others even when I really can't, to make them smile and know they are cared about, along with make myself feel better about life.

I do understand but you don`t feel like you are buying their smile or love? I am often telling someone close to me in real life to stop buying peoples love with gifts, they will love you with or without gifts.

@andriaperry no because we help those who already love us, and those who we dont want love from but who need help. Edit: Also helping others isn't always buying them things. It's being real with them, and being a friend.. Not some phony who really doesn't care but pretends to.. even babysitting for free when a parent doesnt have money for daycare, or when a child is sick and cant be there but the parent needs to work, or cooking them a meal or a bake good when they don't have much for food or money, or inviting them to coffee / tea. Helping doesn't always have to be about buying stuff.

@Courtlynn See I wish this guy could get through life without feeling he had to do stuff for people, who really are not in need, just to be liked. So you can pick out a phony? I have learned to since I am a landlady, I see ALL kinds of people. Edit : Yes most people in need never say a word about it, they have to much pride.

Yes the world can get quite confusing. It is always hard to say when something is going to be really helpful and when it will not be. I am glad the pay phone is a thing of the past. I always felt afraid that I was going to get some bad germs and always kept the phone far from my mouth shouting into the receiver.

Yes, there are many things in life that serve more than one purpose or have a multi-purpose as you pointed out. "Or when people do not tell someone, even a stranger, that they have spinach in their teeth because they want the person to look bad and themselves to look good." I'm not sure about this one, but I would appreciate it if someone told me that I had spinach stuck between my teeth and so that I could clean it and not smile all day and only find out at the end of the day that I was smiling with spinach between my teeth.

@1hopefulman well it would be embarrassing but I have talked to many, many people in a day and then later looked in the mirror and seen either my hair stuck straight out or my mascara smeared across my face and I would just laugh wondering what they were thinking and WHY no one had the ... whatever, was brave enough to tell me.

Looking at the photo, I was struck that the public pay phone is now considered an "antique" that next to no one uses anymore.

This one was still there last year, downtown Anniston. I will look the next time I pass that intersection.
