Mowing the yard with a "reel" push mower

Hi MyLot! One of the things I do for my parents is mow the yard. This is actually a task that I don't mind. It's outdoors, a chance to get sun, and great exercise. Since they have a small town yard - this is done with a walk behind mower. Until, one day, I "killed" the mower. It took my parents a month to check about getting the mower fixed, and - turns out it was some small part that could no longer be ordered. ** As a side note that is something else that irritates me greatly. The fact that you must often times throw away an item simply because you cannot get the one little piece that broke. But that's another post for another day ** So - realizing that - my folks realized that they must buy a different mower. Imagine my surprise when I came to mow - and instead of seeing a traditional gasoline engine push style lawn mower -- a "reel" mower like the ones mentioned in the article I posted a link to below. Well, I admit first I was a little irritated. I thought it would take a lot longer to mow and I thought it would be harder. By the end of the first mow -- I was pleasantly surprised. It does have advantages with it's drawbacks. I'll list some. Reel Mower Disadvantages- * Does not mow when you drag it backwards. (Apparently this is something I do a lot.) * Will not mulch leaves * Jams up with even the smallest twig or stick Reel Mower advantages - * Much lighter weight * Is not a "pull" start * Is not loud (though this is a disadvantage for me because sometimes my dad sees mowing time as a time to visit time.) * Does not take gas The width of the mower is only 1" smaller than the old gas mower I had used, so it doesn't make much of a difference. I've only used it twice now -- with the old gas mower the yard would take me 40-45 minutes , now it seems to take me 70 minutes. However I take more breaks with the reel mower... (I think because I don't have to pull start it.) Also I loved my little workaround - it was in the 90s when I mowed on Monday. So periodically I would pour water over my head to keep cool. To sum it up - the reel mower is not a bad choice, but not a great choice if you have lots of trees or want to mulch leaves. Is outdoor work some of your chores? Do you mow? Have you used a "reel" mower before?

I haven't used a reel mower and don't often mow lawns at all. My husband mows the lawns and I milk the cows. This is a deal we struck long ago but the 'cow' bit only lasted a year or two.

Judy, have you recovered from the cow bite? I hear they can give you a nasty lick too.

@FayeHazel Collecting eggs is easy but there is a certain knack to milking cows.

That sounds like a fair deal. :-) I have always wanted to try milking a cow.... and picking eggs ... :-)

I remember those old mowers! They give you a real workout, too. But I like hearing the whirring noise of the blades instead of the loud roar of the gas motor. It's more relaxing, you can hear the birds and more importantly, it's very hard to injure yourself with one of those! I'm surprised they were able to find one, are they popular again?

We got one at Sears, cause my son said he would use it, years ago. He did not. I have also seen them at Lowes.

@GardenGerty Aw sorry that son didn't turn out to be more helpful. True - they seem to be the trend now.

It is true - In a way I enjoy the soft "whir" sound and watching the blades go 'round. Oh yeah, quite a few places sell them new now -- I think they are gaining in popularity with the environmetalist types - since no gas.

Okay... had to check out your link because I had never heard of a "reel" mower before. We did have one, but dad always called it a "push" mower for obvious reasons lol! Now that was a work out!!

I have to admit I do like the exercise. I was tempted to use the word "push" mower too - but I think of those as the ones with gas motors on.

When we bought our first home I mowed with a gas lawnmower while wearing a bikini. When done, I jumped into our inground pool. We have a lawn service these days and don't even own a mower.

Oh nice! Get a sun tan and then a swim. I should tell the folks I want them to have a pool. Lol. Good for you for lawn service. Must take a lot of stress off.

@FayeHazel Lol! Asking never hurts! We have two acres here, so it helps a lot. We don't have to worry about a broken lawnmower or riding mower anymore. lol

I have always wanted one, but do I mow? I used to own my own landscaping business, mowing was the biggest job of all. I also did my dads mowing for the last 10 years of his life but their yard was a 20 minute mow.

I have one, I have not used it in years. I have a three push mowers, two do not work at this time. I have a rider that has decided not to work. I have a large lot. I sweat a lot. It takes me several hours to finish. I spread it out over a number of days just because it gets too hot.

The new mower is definitely taking more of your time. But the good thing is that you are getting used to it and the job is getting done.

True, I hope that, as I get used to using it I can whittle the time down... but... I'm adjusting... it's not bad. :-)

I haven't been able to cut my own grass for years because of my back, but when I did cut my grass I used a reel mower. Love them.

I have experience with quite a few lawn mowers: the push one, the electric one and the gas one. Never had a ride on. I heard my neck very badly with the gas mowers years ago and I will NEVER touch this stuff again. I use an electric one now. The push lawn mower was when we had a small lot in Toronto.

Oh sorry to hear about your neck. Was it something to do with the "pull" start on a gas mower? Electric sounds nice

That's kind of you to do your parents' lawn. My son does mine, but we only have a push mower. Our lawn is very small.

A yard in the UK is most likely made of concrete or similar hard material and therefore wouldn't be mown. We call it a lawn and usually full of clover and dandelions. Well mine is. I've not used a push along one for years, but I agree they are good exercise machines. I like electric hover mower types that you just hang on to and they glide over the lawn cutting what grass has grown and the heads off the dandelions.

All I know about mowers is that they are noisy objects designed to get us out of bed early on a Saturday morning. Thankfully I am up at six every day of the week. This is the first time I am hearing of a "reel" mower - and the fact that it is quieter should be a plus.

Ah yes mower as alarm clock. It is true, there are some advantages to the reel style mower
