Getting Our Wellness Visit Out of the Way

United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Program likes us to have a wellness visit every year. As an incentive, they offer a $15 gift card. I haven't applied to get mine and hubs yet but we did do our wellness visit last Friday. The good news is there is no charge. The visit doesn't have a lot of poking and prodding to it, but there is a lot of questions about our mental health. I guess seniors must be a depressed bunch. My doctor loved our answers, she thinks we are fun. lol Anyway, my blood pressure was slightly elevated so we decided that perhaps changing my medication to the extended release version would be a good idea. She was afraid it might be more expensive, but no, it is $6 for 3 months of pills. She also suggested that I get a bone density test. I had one 10 years ago and it showed thinning in my lumbar spine. So I went to get that test done this morning. Within 3 hours my doctor called me with the results. It seems my exercise has improved my spin but my left hip has gotten worse. It is thinning where it attaches to the pelvic bone. I am going to start taking calcium and vitamin D and keep up with weight lifting exercise. My hubs got his pneumonia shot that day and we got a call today from the gastroenterologist to schedule his colonoscopy. SInce his mother died from colon cancer this is not something that is avoidable. We also should be hearing from a nephrologist so that he can get his kidney stones checked out. I get to skip the pap smear and the mammogram this year which is always good news. Basically, we were told to keep doing what we are doing, enjoy life, exercise and see you later alligator!! I love a wellness visit!! lol

That is really great that United takes care of you like that and that you do indeed use the advantages of it. Sounds like in general you two are staying up on any issues. Good health to both of you Belle.

I wish our health care provider gave us monetary encouragement. LOL. We do get one wellness check for free every year. Thankful for that one. I do all the necessary tests that need be done. My husband has fewer than I, but will need to have them done in a few years.

lol Yes the sad fact is, the older we get the more things start to wear down and need tests etc. This thinning of bones has me a bit worried.

I think that a check up each year is a good thing. It must be so relieving that the test results are good.

Yes that appears to be what they are trying t find out in this exam, we had to answer a lot of questions about our emotional health. Neither of us is depressed so that is good news.

@BelleStarr I'm sure you will do just as the doctor ordered. Are you taking calcium supplements?

I should probably have a bone density test one day. Vince read the other day that colon cancer in Australia kills more people than road accidents - so that's kind of scary. He has a colonoscopy every three years.

Yes it is a silent kind of killer too, I got my colonoscopy last fall and now I need to take calcium so I am glad I had my bone density checked.

I'm happy husband is doing the colonoscopy. If my mom had hers done regularly she wouldn't have needed all of the operations and chemo.
