I’m Rude

The phone rings. I pick it up. “I’m so glad that I caught you at home,” a woman says. “I’ve been trying for weeks to get ahold of you.” That is a lie because I have caller ID and this number had never come up before. “You have earned 6,758 points from staying at our XYZ* hotels.” “That’s fantastic!” I say. “But I’ve never stayed at any of your hotels.” This woman must be hard of hearing because she just jabbers on. “You have been selected from our pool of guests for a trip to the Caribbean.” Since this woman is hard of hearing I’m rude and I hang up on her. How could I be selected from their pool of guests when I have never stayed at their hotel? I had never heard of the hotel chain she mentioned so I knew I had never stayed there. (Besides that I have not stayed at a hotel since the 1990s.) Another thing the woman never said was my name so there is no way for me to know if she dialed the wrong number or if it was a scam. The fact that she did not mention a name pretty well tells me it was a scam. Or at least something that wasn’t entirely legal. And when I said I never stayed at any of their hotels and the woman ignored that fact also said something wasn’t right. When I was a child I was taught not to just hang up on someone because it was rude. But in today’s world sometimes you have to be rude and hang up on people. There are so many people out there that are trying to rope you into scams that in many cases the best thing to do is hang up on them. *XYZ was not the name of the hotel chain. I can’t remember what hotel name was given so XYZ is just letters to indicate the name.

I hang up too. Really, I think hanging up is more polite than wasting their time. Once I got a call that I had won a trip to Florida. I acted all excited and blathered on about how I was looking forward to the trip. Every time she started to talk, I excitedly asked another quesition. I asked if I would be near any good ski resorts. I asked if I could bring my cat. She finally turned to someone and talked and finally hung up on me.

Ohhhh, I hate those kinds of calls ! I had to learn to be "rude" too . . . hanging up is so much easier than wasting your time listening to their whole spiel and trying to say no to end the call. I get a lot of those automated calls, and they script it like a real call. One "girl" makes it sound like she was "distracted" and says oh I'm sorry about that blah blah blah, so my name is . . . and you've been selected to . . . because you've stayed at one of our XYZ hotels". The dumb thing is they have called MANY times . . . I've heard that same beginning that as soon as I hear the first couple words - I know to hang up immediately. And they use different local phone numbers (those I do pick up in case it's regarding the kids at school).

@RichardMeister The school district messages are annoying too. Although I appreciate they inform us about things, we are bombarded with all kinds of lengthy calls about meetings and announcements - many of which does not exactly relate to us. It comes from various numbers - again local, so it's a hard call to pick up or not.

@much2say Sure has changed since I was a kid. If there was a call from the school most likely one of the kids got into trouble.

That's interesting. This one was a local number with CVSD which I took to mean Central Valley School District. Since there was no reason for the school to be calling me I figured someone dialed the wrong number. Usually I do not answer the phone if it shows an unknown number. Usually I'll let it go to the answering machine. I figure if they don't leave a message it wasn't that important.

I'm always rude in such cases. I usually say "I'm going to hang up now" and I do.

@suziecat7 It's probably because you are not as rude as you think you are.

@RichardMeister that is a waste of time. Time that you wouldn't get back again. Good thing that you hung up.

@sallypup No, I may be rude but not that rude. I think I once heard someone sued claiming the airhorn damaged their hearing. I certainly don't want to get sued.

I'll do what I usually do–don't answer it. The reason I answered this one is because it came up in the caller ID as CVSD which I thought meant Central Valley School District. The school has no reason to call me so I figured someone at the school dialed the wrong number.

Whenever a caller says I have won something I know its a scam. In order to win you have to enter and I don't. In such cases I am also "rude". Telemarketers also win the "rude" treatment from me since they are notorious for being deaf.

That's right. I was supposably entered because I stayed at their hotels. Sorry, I was not entered that way either.

yes i get those too. but likely it was all automated voice too. which is why they ignore you. they have even come up with one that states your name now and seems real. came a long way since my daughter was a cold caller that had to do that for a living. seems these companies have even cut their cost by having a none real person but a machine these days. i just hang up because i know all this and have no idea how to avoid them

I did cold calling back in the 1990s. I wouldn't do it again. This one sounded like a real person and there was no pause from the time I said, "Hello," until she started talking like most of the automated calls I have gotten.
