Does this shell make my butt look big?

Probably the most vulnerable stage of a cicada's life is when they are shedding their shell and changing into the insects known for shrilly 'singing' from trees. This one chose to molt right on the edge of the front porch...I've already had to tell Scar to leave it be a few times. Now I am waiting to see if it makes it through the transition without something happening...like a snack.

Very nice pictures ! I never observed this myself. They are green at this time to be mistaken with a leaf (usually they go on a tree, not on a front porch, this one is a bit stupid).

Same as the dragonflies. I have observed them several times.

Sounds actually quite interesting to watch. Give Scar a cat treat to distract him.

Shell, wow - this totally looks like 2 different whole bugs together! I can't imagine this would make a tasty snack, but I suppose for cats snacks aren't necessarily all about the taste .

You should have taken a video of it so we can see the change happening. I think Scar knows that it doesn't taste nice at all.

@JolietJake It's slow because nobody helped it ... to undress.

Great photos but not seen those around here. We have loads of dragonflies though but they don´t harm anything.

This is a great photo and it is very interesting, I did not know that the cicadas shed their shells exactly like the dragonflies. There was one on a tall grass in the pond shedding its shell yesterday.

I suppose some birds may view them as food too. We don't seem to have them in Oregon, but I remember their "song" from west Texas.

This is SO cool! you got photos of it coming out. I used to find those shells all around the yard in limbs.

Not the cutest of insects but I hope it doesn't end up becoming a meal.

Reminds me of when my youngest sister was about 5 and a ladybug landed on her finger. She was thrilled with her "new friend" until it spread its wings and flew off. She screamed and started crying. She thought it had exploded!

Shrilly "singing"... thought this was a Geddy Lee post. (@JohnRoberts approves this comment.) To be fair, there is a bluegrass equivalent, and prayerfully they'll never do a duet album..... Anyway, as contrary as cats are, maybe you should tell Scar to NOT leave it alone.....
