People Watching

This morning my daughter and I ran some errands and then she wanted to run into the supermarket for a few things and I decided to wait in the car. I love to people watch and what's better than a parking lot at a supermarket. It's curious to see how many people are there mid-morning on a weekday. It made me wonder why most of these people weren't working. There seemed to be just as many middle aged men shopping as women. Of course there were the moms with young kids so with school still on summer vacation it wasn't surprising. Eliminate seniors who are retired and there was still quite a large number of people who are working age. Anyway, it's curious to see how many people return the carts to the cart corral and how many just leave them in a parking spot for the employee to round up when he collects the carts. Then there's fashion. It's mind boggling what some people will wear to the store and others who are dressed like they shop on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. What also surprised me was how many people brought their own bags for their groceries. Very few people came out with plastic bags which is great for the environment. My daughter came out way too fast so my people watching was interrupted. Do you like to people watch?

What interested me more of your post was that you noticed many people taking their own bags to the store.

It was interesting to see so many people come out of the store with their own bags @marguicha. In fact watching them unload their cart and put their groceries in their car was what caught my attention.

I would love to wait in the car and let my kids do the shopping . I do people watching as I shop and I do take notice of the very same things you do! And then I wonder what people must think of me !

@Marilynda1225 I do! I shake my head when I see a lot of junk food in their carts, but I have to tell myself not to be judgmental . . . it's possible they are buying for someone else or maybe they're having a party . . . it's funny how we can sometimes be quick to assume things.

People watching is a great pasttime and I agree that I would wonder what people think of me if they are just sitting there watching. Do you ever look in peoples carts to see what kind of food they are buying?

I only people watch to keep my eye on my surroundings. I don't care if someone returns a cart or not as that doesn't make them a bad person, or what someone wears as long as there's no fat sticking out from them wearing 3 sizes too small. So I pay no mind to others while out in those areas. Just do it for my safety.

Yes, I do. Sometimes it makes me sad to see what people look like who could look much better with a tiny bit of effort.

My husband does most of grocery shopping for me with lists I provide, so I don't shop often. When I do, I'm too busy to look up. We both return our carts to where they belong or give them to someone who asks on their way in. We use both our own bags and plastic and paper provided by the market. We use the paper to line the plastic trash bags in our kitchen trash and recycling bins, and the plastic bags to line our master bath and bedroom wastepaper baskets. I had to laugh at your Rodeo Drive reference. Have you been there? I was and should write a discussion on it. I used to dress like that when I taught and stopped to grocery shop on my way home. I still dress up and wear makeup. I always run into people I know. lol

No I've never been to Rodeo Drive but certainly would like to one day. Since we live in the country seeing someone dressing so fashionably is uncommon and mostly everyone wears jeans and sneakers/boots. I know you are a fashionista Dianne and if you visited here you'd probably stick out like a sore thumb but I always love seeing your pictures and how beautiful you always look.

The other thing I love to watch is the body language of some people. Even when you can't hear a discussion body language can tell you such a lot.

Body language really does say alot when you can't hear what they are saying. It's easy to tell who's happy, who's in a hurry or who's having a disagreement

I love observing people when I am alone in a cafe drinking coffee or cappuccino. The people I observed gave me ideas what to write about.

Yes I do but I watch them as I am doing my shopping there is not much to see here in that sense. There was where I lived before though. I was able to wave and say hello to one of my friends who works in the actual shop and made my day. Everyone here well almost everyone is wearing white clothes for the fiestas that are in the villages.

People watching is free entertainment! When I was a kid, my parents didn't have much money for entertainment so we would park at a busy place and people watch.
