I Thought I Was Finished With My Pepper Spray Trouble

Two weeks after that incident with my pepper spray at the office, in my post below , I was surprised when the HR Officer came to me apologetic that he is giving me a notice to explain. He explained that the parents of the asthmatic officemate I had talked about in my post came to the office while I was on undertime, since we will be going to Bataan then so they weren’t able to talk to me. They were distraught to learn from their daughter about what happened and that their daughter seemed anxious still when she told them about it. I again apologized to the said officemate and asked her to send my apology to her parents. Then, I gave an explanation for the Notice To Explain the HR officer gave me. I apologized for my stupidity in my letter and said that I am ready to receive whatever disciplinary action they may give me, even if it was unintentional to bring hazard to everyone when I did it. At the toolbox meeting, I also did a public apology. After that, all the guilt I felt for what I unintentionally have affected the employees, was gone. Would you also apologize if you were in my stead?
Just a while ago, my order online for a pepper spray finally arrived. I bought it to protect myself after my scary experience from a pedicab driver, I posted...

Apologies was the only way to go. Everybody noticed that you were the first victim of your spray, and I do not think you deserve disciplinary action for that. I hope you got rid of this gadget weapon.

Yes, that is true. Even if the apology is late, since I waited for the townhall meeting where everyone is present, they saw and hear my sincere apology. No, the gadget is in my bag. It's actually for my self-defense because of that incident one night that I posted about. Though, I pray that I don't get to use it at all. It is so potent.

Of course I would have apologized. This product is not even allowed here because it can do a lot of harm, so I would have more than one reason to apologize.

Yes, we should indeed apologize even if we didn't intend the harm done.

@SIMPLYD It happens to do something that can become dangerous, even if it was not our intention to harm. I hope that this girl has calmed down now.

@LadyDuck Well, actually she was okay after that incident already. So, I was surprised her parents reacted that way and went to the office. But when I apologized to her again, she seemed ashamed. I think she's okay now.

Yes, I would apologize to everyone concerned as it is something I should not have done. Unfortunately, sometimes there are people who take advantages of situations to see how much they can get for their benefit.

Yes, I so agree with you on that. I was surprised that the parents of my officemates came to the office to talk about it with me. I never thought that they will do that, because their child, my officemate was so okay already after that. So, I apologized again to the officemate who seemed embarrassed, that her parents still came to the office since she doesn't live with them anymore as she is married already,

Yes, I would apology and you went above and beyond. That is a little beyond for her to go tell her parents and for her parents to come report to the office as it was an accident. I am surprised the spray wasn't directly at anyone and it caused a lot of fumes. But it's a lesson learned for you and for others too that this is effective and is for protection. And like Felix mentioned some can take advantage of the situation.

@SIMPLYD Yes, I wonder if they did to see if they can get something from the company perhaps, just to test it out. But I am glad it is all over after all. Now I am sure the office mate feels strange now that everyone knows her parents' had to report to work. Here, it'd be considered a snitch.

@infatuatedbby When I asked apology from her once again, and told her that I came to know that her parents came when I was on a leave of absence, she was so silent and seemed ashamed.

Actually, I thought it went beyond indeed with the case of my officemates. I guess, she didn't expect her parents to do that, since she lives far from them. But I am happy it's over now. It gave me a hard lesson.

I would most certainly apologize as you did. I don't know what else you can do. It seems to me that, from reading your other two discussions about it, you apologized profusely several times. I think you did the absolutely right thing. I'm glad that your guilt has gone now. You can't beat yourself up forever for making a mistake, even though it was a serious one, nevertheless, it was a mistake. And mistakes are not a total waste if we learn from them. I think you're quite a stand-up kind of person.

Thank you for you consoling words. I actually waited for that townhall meeting where everyone is present so the HR officer can see how apologetic I am for the unintentional effect of what I have done. I am waiting for the disciplinary action actually, but I pray it will be no more. I can actually be suspended from work for a day , if they will base it in the Code of Conduct of the company. I hope my apologies have erased that.

@SIMPLYD I don't see how you could have done anything more than you already have. That was a good idea to wait for the meeting. I really hope there's no more action taken on the incident. It was an unfortunate occurrence. I certainly hope there's no suspension. Good luck with whatever happens. I'll be thinking of you.

Did you spray a lot? You press it hard so it affected your officemates. Maybe you should tested it outside of the office. It means it's really effective for attackers. I would apologize if I cause some trouble to others even I don't intend to cause harm to anybody

I actually sprayed very little, just to test if the sprayer is working. It nearly went into my eyes even , thanks to my eyeglasses. Yes, I should have thought first before I made that so I have to answer for the consequence and I am glad I made the public apology. It freed me from my guilt finally.

I think it shows character to apologize. It shows that you care about others and they should accept it with good intention. When it comes to office settings there are always legal implications and people wish to protect themselves. If the girl needed time off she should be compensated. You don't deserve any further punishment in my opinion nor should you feel guilty for making a tiny mistake anyone could make. If they want to blame someone blame the drunken fool on the street. I admire what you did.

I was surprised too, actually. But then, the HR Officer would like to remind me that something like this even if it is unintentional to harm anyone in the office, is something that is not allowed at the office. The disposition with regards this offense of mine is 1 days suspension and I shall be serving it tomorrow, timing for the fiesta in our hometown.

@SIMPLYD ouch, I feel for you... Once, one of our team was careless, and left something very smelly in a garbage bin in the office. We all were told off, but they couldn't pin the fault on anyone of us, so there was a report about this, but that was it. (Someone tried to frame me I think, but I didn't do it and pointed that out!)

It must have been very traumatic experience for their daughter being an asthmatic .. But surely they should know that you din't do it on purpose and that you were sorry for what happened .. I'm sure they also know that you are responsible adult that you will take extra careful with your pepper spray ... I hope they have accepted your apology and that the young woman recovered fully from anxiety...
