Today is National Waffle Day, August 24th hooray! Thanks to the Pilgrims who brought waffles to America in 1620, after discovering them during their brief stop in Holland, we have a delicious breakfast treat to add to our morning menu. Somewhere many diner owners are smiling. The word waffle first appeared in the English language in the 18th Century, although its origins can be traced to the Middle Ages of Europe. According to Merriam-Webster, the first known use of the word “waffle” is 1744. However, The Nibble reports that it was used in print in 1735. Thomas Jefferson reportedly started a mini American waffle craze during the 1790s when he returned from France with a goose-handled waffle iron. I thought these few facts I found on Google and other sources on the beginnings of the waffle might be of interest. Though you don’t need an excuse to eat waffles on any given day, here it is... You may want to check out local restaurants and hotels in your area for free waffles or discounts Or a local Waffle House which is offering a free waffle to anyone who provides their e-mail address.
