Learning to swim

A long time ago, when I was little, I learned how to swim at my local lake and YMCA. I did get my American Red Cross card that said I know to learned the basics as a beginner. Since then, I've been mainly a floater and maybe a nonswimmer. (I would have to see if I have my card or had it thrown in away, when I moved). I don't even know to dive well, too. Also when I went to summer camp too, I had to swim in a race and landed in last place. So I've been thinking of getting 30-minute swimming lessons at the gym, possibly private, to refresh my memory on how to swim this fall. I just need the basics to get me by and do it on my own. It costs $30 for private vs. $37 for group lessons. Plus it would be great exercise too. I'm going to mention it to my brother and father aboout it this week and sign up for it hopefully next week. I'll keep you posted if it's official and when I do start. Are you a great swimmer? And have you learned or re-learned something new?

I can swim reasonably well. I won't win any ribbons though.

Same here. I don't think I can do anything higher than beginners. So the basics would do for me and go at my own pace.

@KristenH my oldest grandson swims competitively. He has been ranked and in a recent competition he commented that it sucked to lose to a girl. But it was okay because she was an Olympic medalist.

Yes, I have loved swimming since I was a kid, and I went yesterday. However, I don't enjoy indoor pool swimming too much, nor when the water is too cold. Yesterday. was a very nice swimming day. Everything was good, air temp, water temp etc.

Cool Snowy. I don't blame you. I prefer the heated therapy pool water or by the slide or the leisure pool. The lap pool is always cold.

I used to be a competitive swimmer in high school and college. I learned to swim when I was very young, maybe four-years-old, but I didn't start swimming year-round until I was 16. I am a good swimmer, (or at least I was until the years started piling up on me), and I still love getting into the water whenever I can. Years ago, I was world-ranked in freestyle and I was an All-American swimmer in college. I also broke a few state records in Arizona and one national record. Swimming is one of the best exercises out there to get in shape because it works most major muscle groups and it is a good sport as far as cardiovascular fitness. I think it's awesome that you want to get back in the water and take a lesson. When I was in the pool working out, I felt so at peace just swimming up and down the pool. Good luck to you, and keep us updated.

Thank you so much. I agree with you on how swimming is good for you. I hope to sign up for classes, depending on my funds this fall. More power to you to go all out in swimming and compete.

I learnt how to swim at the age of six at the local swimming pool from a 'teacher'. I can't swim quickly but this doesn't disturb me. I think it's a good idea if you take lessons to brush up what you learnt a long time ago.

Thanks. I might help save a life too. It should be interesting. I worry about picking the days to swim later.
