Wildlife-spotting

Whenever we go out for a walk, it always adds a little extra excitement and pleasure to spot some of the more elusive wildlife, and in the ten years that we’ve lived in this village and walked in the nearby woods, we’ve often looked out for the deer which we know live there. Even so, I have rarely seen them. Once a Muntjac leapt out of a bush just in front of me, and another time a Roe buck ran across our path, but the few other times I’ve seen any they have been just a glimpse in the distance, and more often than not I’ve been lucky to spot anything more than a hoofprint. Since moving to our current house though I have seen more deer than in all the years before – and not because of improved deer-stalking techniques but simply by looking out of the window. Turns out that the places deer actually like to hang out are not the deepest recesses of the woods but actually our gardens. And not just in the dim light of dusk or dawn either; they are quite happy to stroll across the grass and nibble the shrubs in the middle of the afternoon. This one is in one of our neighbours’ gardens. It’s nice to see them, but my garden is now festooned with wire and plastic mesh to protect the flowers! Those animals are so cute, but I know that they can destroy a garden. We are not visited by deer, only badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and sometimes wild boars. The latest are not welcome.

Are there many wild boars in your country? I know that there are a lot in Italy too.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, there are many. During summer day stay up in the woods, but in winter they often come down to dig the gardens. They like tubers, so they come in search of potatoes. In Italy they are mainly in the center of Italy. They make cured meats using wild boars, the sausages and the ham are pretty good.

@JamesHxstatic There are even some in the UK, although only in one or two locations.

Our yard has also been visits by deer and foxes, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, opossums and various other critters. I'm always entertained by them.

Growing up I never saw deer, but as the city has expanded, the deer have moved in, or at least into the lawns. One night 23 years ago I spotted 4 deer a few blocks from one of the houses I grew up in.

@Fleura I suspect that's because they have fewer places to hide. They are also emboldened by being around humans and not being hunted.

It's funny that I also see far more wildlife living in the suburbs than I did growing up in the country.

What a cute pic.. I love taking deer pics.. I luckily don't get them in my garden.. but I only have to drive about 3/4 of a mile away to see them.

@Fleura oh no!. as a gardener.. I can see how I would probably soon be easily upset with the deer if they were eating all my plants!

That's probably the best option! At the moment I'm engaged in something of a war with the deer that want to eat all my garden plants!

They are cute to see, especially the young ones, but they come out of our woods and gobble up everything in sight! I've planted marigolds, which they don't like. I actually had some flowers appear this year.

I noticed that my marigolds survived unscathed as well - will sow more next year!

@DianneN I know a few plants that deer don't like - basically those are what was in the garden when we bought it! I did wonder why there were quite so many specimens of one or two particular plants; now I know. They definitely don't eat Mahonia, Choisya, Nigella, Berberis or Pyracantha!

Deers are something you don't see visiting houses here. They're cute and I'm reminded of Bambi. However, I do understand they could destroy a pretty garden.

That's the snag isn't it. You want to see them but they also have a tasting for your plants and shrubs.

That's just it. We wouldn't even mind if they grazed the grass as there's plenty of it and it would save us mowing!

They love to eat roses and many other shrubs. Great photo!

Yes I have found that. The only roses that are safe are the climbing ones above about 4 feet!

I think the only deer I have ever seen have been squished at the side of the road, sadly. :)

They are surprisingly hard to spot, given that the deer population has mushroomed in recent years!

The wire must not be good for the deer. I am so happy you see lots of deer now where you live.

I used to think it would be a cool idea having deer living close by. Reading more discussions from the internet, I found out that deer could attack people in certain season. Hope you are OK if you happen to bump into them.

I believe that sometimes happens. Luckily the ones round here are reasonably small and mostly just run away.
