What is that smell?

This past week I have been complaining everyday to my husband about the garbage smelling so bad. He takes it out and it seems okay, but tonight it started again and I know he took it out today after dinner.
He just got up before and said he is beginning to think there is a dead animal in the house. Being it is almost midnight and he just woke up, he said we can look in the morning.
I think I am sleeping with my head under the cover. I don't want to start looking alone in case something jumps out at me.

@AbbyGreenhill You are right and I had cooked cabbage leftovers in it. The smell has gone.

My husband said it was the garbage in the kitchen. He threw it out and washed the can and put a new bag in it. I do not know how it could have been that as there was not much in it.
