What would you do with your pet or pets if faced with the imminent onslaught of a dangerous hurricane - and you must evacuate?
Usually evacuees must seek shelter in places where pets are not allowed - and that is one of the reasons why some opt to 'ride out ' the storm in their own homes.
So, would you hurry to a safe place and leave your pet behind? According to a report from WPTV - a CNN affiliate -- over fifty abandoned pets were rescued in Palm County before the onslaught of hurricane Irma - and taken to animal shelters. They were left by their owners in pens or chained in yards.
It is painful to think what would have happened to those poor animals when Irma hit. What would you do with your pet or pets?

Pets are family members, they shouldn't be left behind!

@Kandae11 But that's negligence and can also be punished.
I would try my best to ask for help from relatives or animal shelters.
Then I don't know what's worse: abandoning your pet or hiding it from the shelter that can't host it.
If I had a pet elephant, then that'd be another story.

@Kandae11 Animals shelters that are not in the evacuated area, because those are supposed to evacuate as well, with all their hosts.

@sabtraversa Suppose the shelter is in an area where everyone has left. Who will be in charge at the shelter.

They have shelters here that are pet friendly. And if we ever have to evacuate our pets will come with us where ever we go!

@Kandae11 Me either, it's awful. Those people should NOT own a pet.

I posted something very similar a short while ago! I find it horrible that people will leave their pets. Even more horrible that people leave their pets in tiny cages outside, or tied to trees and poles where they don't even have a chance of finding a safe place.
When we left for Matthew last year we spent 2 days trying to find a place that would let us bring our two elderly dogs with us. We ending up in a fleabag motel, but at least we knew our boys were safe.

@Kandae11 .. No..I would find shelter for them first...because they can't communicate in my language, and it is unlikely anybody else would help them in such a situation. If they were not my pets, they would have known how to tackle such situation because nature would have taught them. No..they are like my kids. No way would I leave them helpless.

It would be a difficult decision. I would not want to leave my cat behind so I would have to consider my options. I certainly would not abandon him.

I would find a place to go where I could take them. If I couldn't find a place the i would be staying because there is no way I would be going anywhere without my beloved pets. They are part of the family.

I wouldn't have attached my dogs or left them in cages. That is horrible. I more than likely would of taken them with me to a safe location or out of the state if need be. i am glad they rescued them before the storm hit. That is horrible to do this to them.

My dog would go with me, or I'd refuse to go anywhere! If my dog was in danger of a terrible storm, it would be with me at his side:(
