Halloween treats from Halloween past

My fiance and I were talking today about when we were kids and use to go trick or treating and how things were different back then. We use to get a lot of homemade treats which we always looked forward to. We knew everybody in our neighborhood and we didn't have to worry about treats not being safe. My grandmother and my aunts always made fudge for Halloween. I use to love the Divinity fudge that my grandmother made. It was so good. Another neighbor use to make candy apples and my mom use to make rice krispies balls similar to the ones in the above picture. We always got lots of fruit and other homemade goodies. One lady gave us a quarter each and we would go to the store any buy penny candit's with it. What was you favorite Halloween treats when you were a kid?

My mom loved divinity! We didn't go trick or treating, but our church had a Harvest Fest with candy given out. I loved the mini Baby Ruths.

Always got candy when I'd go, besides one person who handed out the small bags of chips.

Things do change quite a bit. It still seems like things are different from when I was a kid. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of people handing out treats and such for Halloween anymore, which is a shame.

@Happy2BeMe It's a shame. I used to love going trick or treating, and I'm enjoying it with my kids. It's a shame that fewer people are doing it.

@dodo19 I think so too. It is fun and children should get to enjoy it.

We did not celebrate Halloween in Italy when I was a kid. It came in fashion a few years ago but it did not last.

By the time I was a kid in the '80s/early '90s, it was considered unsafe to eat any homemade treats, so if any of our neighbors ever gave us any, we had to throw them away. My favorite Halloween treats were always the miniature candy bars...didn't really matter what kind. I was (and am) a chocolate junkie.

@Happy2BeMe Yes they are! I suppose my favorite Halloween candy is caramel apple pops, since I don't normally see them out any other time of year. (I think one local store sells them year round but I'm not usually in the mood for caramel apple stuff in April or July...)

Trick or treating was not very much popular in our country then. But kids nowadays are excited for it. talk about costumes.

@Happy2BeMe Yeah, and a little bit stress for the parents because some kids do not want to use again a costume they already used.

Those rice crispy balls look great. might have to make some. Halloween wasn't that big over here when I was a kid. Only went trick or treating a couple of times. We got candy. I love candy or sweets as we say. Sweets are good with me. I make cupcakes every year.

The fudge sounds delicious. We didn't go out for Halloween when we were young. When we first moved out to the village where we just moved from, it was a close tight-knit community and I remember the first few years our son got homemade goodies. People would wrap them nice and tight and then slip them into a baggie with their name on it-for safety, not that you had to worry. I remember when people transitioned from homemade treats to the store-bought ones, and how the kids would react because I usually was the one who accompanied our son and a friend when he went out.

@Happy2BeMe I remember they used to come in these little boxes - I wish I could find some now. If memory serves they had a kind of buttery/nutty taste and looked like real beans.
