We returned to what looked like a war zone

After leaving Florida to get away from hurricane Irma, we returned today to a big shock. Parts of the community was totally gone. Some houses have no roofs and others had rooms torn off.
One house we could see right into the house as the outside wall is gone.
We were lucky
as besides having more than half of the landscaping I did myself is either gone or dead but the biggest thing for us is the car port was blown apart. The craziest thing is both of our cars where under it but didn't have any damage.
The roof was hanging over where the cars. were. We had a repair man come right away so everything doesn't land on my car.

I´m glad you had such luck although it is terrible the amount of damage that the hurricane left.

@ramapo17 It is terrible. One of my friends had a yacht in the southern part of Florida and my a miracle it is still floating but needs much repair.

@marguicha They were lucky. A few friends of mine live on the keys at the very bottom of Florida and I haven't heard how they are making out yet.

Right in my community there are some houses that had the roofs taken off and others lost some rooms and we can see right into the house and out the other side. We are all in the same area. Hurricanes are very strange and one doesn't know the direction it is going to hit as it changes its mind. (Sort of like a woman, hahaha.)

I am glad you were not around for that storm. It is good that there was no more damage than that done and the cars are alright too.

@JamesHxstatic I can't wait for the people to come and fix the car port. Some of the pieces are hanging down and I am worried they might fall down. We can't pull them as we don't want to pull down the rest that is up there.

We were lucky. The yard is a mess with so many down trees but we are not complaining about that. There was no electricity for many days and then no television for days after the electricity came on. The cable company finally came on yesterday.

This is the first direct reporting I have read so far. It was a wise decision that you were not there to witness the devastation.
Nature has its way but has no answer to give, sadly.

That's good there was no dammage to the cars. That is sad that all those houses we're destroyed I hope everyone had insurance.

@Tina30219 I think everyone should have home owners insurance as nothing is totally protected in this world.

I am amazed that people don't have insurance when buying a place down here which is a big storm area. So many people think they will never have anything happen to them.

At least now you're home and ready to repair the damage that was caused by the hurricane. It's heartbreaking to see this kind of damage especially if there were lives lost.

I have been seeing a lot of different things, some places were hit so hard where others were super lucky. I hope the ones that got hit severely can get fixed up soon. I know it can't be easy.

I am in a retirement community and some of the people are very old. I feel sorry for them.

That was a good piece of luck about the cars and your home. I'm sorry the rest of your community suffered a lot of loss with their homes. Do you think it was where your home was located in the community that saved your home and not others?

I do as we have a lot of old big trees behind us and the other area are many new homes and there are hardly any trees. It always amazes me after anything like this and to ride around and wonder why some people had so much worse than the others.

I am praying for everyone involved and that have lost their items and homes. This is horrible and I am glad that you decided to leave instead of stay because you would never have known what would have happened. I am glad that you and your family are safe and sound. I hope that everything goes well for you and all of you will be in my prayers.

So sorry you suffered damage to your home. What a terrible hurricane that was. My brother's friend who has a winter home in Naples, had some damage also. Not sure how bad, My Dad's condo in Fort Myers somehow escaped harm. I think because it is more inland by the city itself. Hope your repairs go well. All the best, DB
