Plastic bag

Things are not the same again in Africa especially in Kenya the government has decided to get rid of plastic bags. You go to a supermarket without a shopping bag and you are given the shopping on your hands. They don't care how much items you have shopped for. Alternatively you buy a shopping bag just outside the shops which is a bit expensive. Suppose one had no extra money for the shopping bag!!! I find this not good at all.

I agree with you, but they should have introduced an alternative to the plastic bags

Yeah. They did very wrong. They removed plastic bags without replacing. I remember last week I was buying pads in Tuskys and they wrapping it in a piece of magazine. I refused, since I had my school bag with me.

I can't believe this! Why don't you bring your own shopping bag now that you know you won't get one at the shop? I congratulate Kenya for doing away with plastic bags.

@Akatheu I am so sorry about that. Those bags are not of good quality. But they do not have a choice since the government implemented a rule before allowing people to get replacement first. Nowadays it is better to walk with backpack.

I went shopping with my hubby last week just to check in my handbag I had not carried my shopping bag. We were give the items on our hands, just to buy a bag outside the supermarket, within a minute the bag tore off and everything was on the floor!!!!

@Akatheu If they use paper bags now, then there's no problem for the environment.

I like the idea but they would have replaced the plastic bags with something else

@MALUSE the plastic bags take years to decompose, so I think banning their use will be better for the environment

Change is inevitable...I believe this change is good as plastic bags were causing a lot of pollution and hence doing more bad than good.Just carry a shopping bag wherever you go.You will soon adjust.

I see that using plastic bags may be punished for some money in Kenya from TV news. Here although the supermarkets will not offer plastic bags for free any more, but you can buy them anyway. I always bring my own cloth bag to go shopping. I want to do something good for the environment.

Don't they have shopping bags that you can buy next to the counter where they run your items? Not that hard to bring a bag.

I don't think they have, hawkers are selling the bags outside the shops, so you have to buy one before you get into the shop

I find this the best thing Kenya has done so far. Hygienically the country will be cleaner, shopping will be more organized this is a thing they could have done long long time ago. For me i like it and support it fully. Asante sana.
