Sharks Versus Mosquitoes

United States

Sharks really have a bad name in most circles. Being killed or maimed by a shark gets top billing on the news, when it happens. Very few people speak well of sharks. Me? I don’t swim where sharks live. It’s their place to live and have babies. They don’t come into my house, so I stay out of theirs. It’ a matter of mutual respect. But…not for those who love to surf and swim in dangerous waters. About TEN people, on the average, are killed by sharks every year. That’s ten people too many in my estimation. But what about mosquitoes? Did you know that about 725,000 people are killed by mosquitoes every year? That’s WAY too many!!! Mosquitoes carry deadly diseases, such as Yellow Fever and Malaria and a whole host of other diseases, that most people don’t realize. The difference is that shark deaths can be entirely eliminated if humans stay out of their habitat. Mosquitoes are a completely different problem. They are EVERYWHERE! And they lay their eggs in standing water. Swamps breed mosquitoes, but also their eggs can be found in water dishes for dogs and cats. They can be found in containers left outside, that catch rain water. Make sure you property is clear of any standing water. After it rains, inspect your property for any containers that may have collected water and empty them immediately. Here in the USA, mosquitoes are causing many illnesses and I know that in other countries, this is also a problem. Be aware of your surroundings and take the time to protect your family by not giving mosquitoes a chance to lay eggs on your property. Use mosquito netting and avoid being outside at night, if at all possible.

Alice, here is a question for you? Do you ever wonder why Noah brought the 2 mosquitoes into the ark?

Noah had no choice, since the two frogs refused to get into the ark, unless there were some mosquitoes there for them to munch on.

@YrNemo I guess if they ate the flies they would have put on too much weight.

Especially in 3rd world countries, people need help obtaining proper netting and sprays to keep mosquitos away so they don't become fatally ill. Crazy.

Yes, 3rd world countries or what they now call developing countries are especially plagued with disease-carrying mosquitoes. Are there a lot of mosquitoes where you live in Canada. I was surprised when I lived in Maine near the Canadian border, that mosquitoes were very bad. But, northern Maine has a lot of swamps.

@MissNikki Yes. That makes sense. Do you live in a big city? I live near Richmond, Virginia USA. Richmond is the capital city of Virginia, but I live in the county south of Richmond.

@IreneVincent It depends where you are in Canada. In the city it's not so bad but in the forest interior it can be.

This was a great post and thank you so much for the information. Maybe sharks became very popular because of the movie Jaws. I heard or read about what mosquitoes do. I was not aware of mosquitoes here in Israel this summer. We certainly do have a lot of flies. My cat is fasinated by them.

When I was a teenager, thinking of mosquitoes and diseases they spread, made me scared stiff. I am still frightened of mosquitoes these days and doing my best to prevent troubles.

Mosquitoes are dangerous and need to be feared. I worry about my great grandchildren who play outside after dark sometimes in their back yards.

@IreneVincent We once faced some sort of dengue fever problem. I still remember looking at each mosquito with fear. Then the danger passed (thanks be to God!).

@YrNemo A friend of mine, whose daughter contracted dengue fever, on a trip to a Central American country, said that her daughter still suffers from the effects of that disease.
