Second Place, They Can't All Be Firsts!

Yesterday's discussion gave my results....today I'll share some photos of my winning entries. This first photo will show four of the items that earned second place. Overall I was in agreement with the decisions made by the judges, but I have noticed over the last couple of years that the judges don't seem to be fans of scrappy quilts. The scrappy quilts seem to place lower in scoring, no matter how intricate or detailed the quilt is.

And I suppose that if you change everything up next year they will change their preferences again. I do like that quilt in the lower right hand corner, such beautiful colours.

I was quite proud of each of these entries. They have their criterion...and we can't always know what it is.

I do not understand a price for the top right, it's not bad, but not worth a price, I like the other three. The one I like more is bottom right.

@Morleyhunt So the first place table runner did not deserve the price? Well, it happens all the time.

Each of these items took second place in their cTegory. The table runner top right, should have been first...the first place table runner was uneven...one side an inch longer than the other...

They're all lovely. I like the second and fourth ones. I can tell the second is like a table runner, what will the fourth be used for? It looks like a rug to me, but I've not heard of quilted rugs before.

@Morleyhunt The last one doesn't look that large in that image, probably because it stands alone. It would be lovely to display on a bed.How long did it take you to make that anyway?

@MarshaMusselman I think I worked on the applique for about a month...I took it with me as a hand work project when on vacation. The quilting took me about six weeks.

The hearts are a wall hanging...the table runner is self explanatory...the cross is a wall hanging and the last one is a bed quilt.

The table runner was a favorite of mine. I thought it deserved a first. The runner that won first wasn't even straight.

There were many beautiful and well made quilts entered. I was honoured to win the overall top points for quilting. That's the prize I really wanted. It's a gift certificate for a fabric store.

I think that second place is a great honor. Furthermore, if you won everything in first place nobody would want you back next year. You do such beautiful work that people would stop submitting their crafts. Just joking with you on this one. I think they ae beautiful and sonicely done.

but i find that all your handcraft work are so delicate and beautiful, unfair of those judges who didn't let you be the champion

They might have tried to calculate the cost involved (but that is so not fair!).

No, they don't look at the cost of materials. They have a set of guidelines, and then, like anything else, personal taste also enters the equation. Personally I find quilts that are too matchy-matchy to be a bit boring.

As you say, you can't win them all. I like the top-left one. Is it a door hanging?

I do the piecing by machine (several on my old treadle sewing machine). I've machine quilted two of these projects and hand quilted the quilt on the bottom right...as well as hand appliqued the border.
