The Halloween tradition has been around in North America since the late 1920's. It has been a tradition in Ireland and Britain since the 16th century. Children and adults would go house to house reciting poetry in exchange for food or money. As far back as Ancient Greece there have been records of trick or treating. In Deipnosophists, written by Athenaeus, he writes of a custom where children would dress as swallows and go door to door demanding food. The owners of the house was threatened with mischief if the children were refused.

@celticeagle I would hope the kids had ice packs in a cooler as they went door to door so their food would not spoil, but that probably was not the case .

@much2say ......They had their ways of keeping food back then. A lot of illness from bad food probably occurred though.
