Bad habits at bedtime

When I was 13 years old I was allowed a telly in my bedroom, and although it seemed great at the time I really wish I'd never asked for it. Until then I used to read for hours every night, I was allowed to read for an hour after bedtime but I'd switch my light off after that hour and then carry on reading under the quilt with a torch. Once the TV came along, my reading time slowly dwindled down to very little Now I'm an adult I don't allow myself to have a TV in my bedroom, and I read for an hour every night in bed - I would read for longer but I have to be strict with my sleep now I've got Leonard to wake me up in the night and in the morning However, I'm staying at my parents' house this week while they're away, and they've got a telly in their bedroom. I brought my book with me, and I've tried to read, but for some reason I can't concentrate and I'm now laid in bed watching something on channel 5 about awkward and funny chat show moments... I'm not worried though, on Friday night I'll be back home with my technology-free bedroom and I'll get back to my normal routine How do you feel about watching telly in bed?

Since my concentration for reading is down to zero due to.....sadly, I have to watch a movie to fall asleep..thats okay though as some are that boring Lily. Yes I miss the days when reading was it..not mindless telly.

I always thought I couldn't fall asleep without telly on in the background, til I stopped and realised the telly had been keeping me awake for years

@TiarasOceanView I think we didn’t know it was a bad thing til recent years though, like how people used to think smoking was good for your throat

I have had a tv in our bedroom for years. My husband and I sometimes don't like the same shows so I watch in my bedroom.

Do you watch it before going to sleep and do you think it affects your quality of sleep?

I feel about with my hands, how do you feel about?

@LilyBeBack I was going to suggest I feel for you, as I am good with my hands, and that you would probably feel about 27. But now you say you are an alien with 700 spiked tentacles, I think I'll come nowhere near you.

@Orson_Kart Good thinking, batman! I would indeed feel about 27, going on 28, or 329 on my home planet

Well, at night I return to my original alien form, so I feel about with my 700 spiked tentacles

I put the telly on timer and I go to sleep to the background noise. I like the light noise.

That's what I've been doing this week, the thing is I'm used to going to sleep with silence now, so the telly keeps me awake for longer, but my mam's house is on a main road, whereas at my house it's extremely quiet, so the outside noise here also keeps me awake if I don't put the telly on

@LilyBeBack Yes rather a catch 22 that, but I always put a very boring show on lol

I prefer not to. Plus we live in an apartment and having one TV in the living room is enough.

I agree - I might think differently if I was in a relationship or sharing the house with a friend or something, but it's just me and my son so once he's in bed I watch what I want to watch in the living room

@cahaya1983 My family all say the key to a successful relationship is having separate TVs

@LilyBeBack Yeah I agree. In that case I'd opt for having my own TV in the bedroom too

I have a TV in my bedroom but have no problem turning it off when I want to read. Most times there is nothing good on anyway.

I do have that problem I also like to have a clear differentiation between my bedroom and the rest of the house

Nice. I also read before bed. I hear watching tv before bed causes poorer sleep but I am not sure if this is true or not.

I think it does because it takes me a lot longer to fall asleep when the TV is on

I have always had a TV in our bedroom. Sometimes I do not like what is on in the living room.

Yeah I think if there was another adult living with me then I might have to consider getting a telly in the bedroom, but I'd be very reluctant to do it
