Nationwide

While we were having our lunch at a restaurant here (my son gave a blowout), I received a text message from my colleague Miss CC; she asked me if we will have duty tomorrow. I replied, “yes, why?” She said there is a nationwide suspension of classes in both public and private schools. Upon arriving home, I immediately looked up on Facebook and also inquired to our clinical coordinator that we, part-time clinical preceptors, will wait for his or the dean’s announcement. He answered through his wife’s account. And several minutes ago, Miss CC messaged me on chat that there is a suspension of classes tomorrow. The transport strike will also take effect here in our city even though the main mode of transportation is the tricycle. The strike is really nationwide. Ergo, I can stay late here. I can also sleep late. But I have already conditioned myself that we will have our duty tomorrow.

What I've learned is that the memo came from Malacanang. Then, is it the schools only, how about the government entities like the government units and the national agencies? I hope this will not bring confusion again.

They were nice to let you stay at home because of the strike. I remember when this happened in Italy and we all walked for kilometers to reach our working place.

@ridingbet My school was 5 Km from my parents apartment, I have walked there so many times during the late 60's when there were strikes almost every week.

i also had the chance to walk 3 kilometers when there were no available tricycle to bring us to school. this happened when i was 4th year high school. i, my big brother, and my kid brother walked from our house to our school in the morning, and our town was still so underdeveloped that there were no streetlights yet.

I saw an announcement on Facebook for a non-profit organization in the Philippines that told their workers they had to come to work so please work out transportation needs today!

@YrNemo and i feel so elated when they approach me first if they have some concerns regarding their duty or in school, or their students. they treat me as their mother.

Classes and government work is suspended because of the nationwide transport strike. I doubt if the strike will do any good though. Perhaps to those looking to take advantage of the situation and try to double or triple the fare that they charge.

@ridingbet I took Uber on my way to work and I was surprised that there was no traffic at all. I got to the office in 20 minutes.

it is a surprise because we have the normal flow of traffic here. the tricycles are not included in the strike. if our school won't join the suspension, then we will be happy.

I don't want to be plastic to say I do not like holidays or something to suspend work and classes. But to think that more employees do not earn for thay day because they are under what we say, no work no pay, because they are only being paid for the time they actually render work.

that is so true. when there are sudden unannounced suspension of duty, i and my part-time colleague would get disgusted. especially regarding school activities wherein we are already in the hospital then our beadle says 'there is no duty today'. my God, we change our clothes and travel and then, no duty?

They just think they control the roads now, huh? They're supposed to be public transport and shouldn't go on strike with that decade old jeeps, shuttles and trikes of theirs.

@ridingbet Well, There's just too many drivers now and you don't really know who's the decent ones out there.

i somehow agree with them. here in my city, there are so many jeepneys that are old but not worn-out and they can carry loads of passengers. the owners and drivers are safe drivers and do not drive recklessly. they stood past the test of time, that is why i disagree with the notion that jeepneys should be phased out and these should be changed to the more modern transport.

@Letranknight2015 by decent, do you mean the jeepneys looking presentable and good? there are here, but there are some SUV's who are also driven by reckless drivers. several weeks ago, 2 vans bumped into each other causing deaths of 5 people and injured dozens.

A strike is really so disruptive, which I suppose is the goal, but I hope everything settles back to normal soon.

the people behind the strike did not get what they want because our president was so firm like a rock. another nationwide strike is again being planned, and i hope the announcements will just cover the capital city.

yes i have, but for a part-time employee like me, a day without work is also a day without salary that is why we part-timers are not happy about this sudden announcement of duty suspension.

I read about it our Mayor's page that there are no classes on Public and Private, and even in the Government but I heard some people still have worked despite the reminders.

if it is a private firm, then it is upon the discretion of the president or the owner if they should heed to the announcement or defy it.
